Set eggs 3/5. Looking for others to hatch with! - Page 27

Good morning,

I got my pack of Velcro 'One-Wrap' straps last night.  They were just $2.97.  I cut them down in size (about in half) and should get about 5 legbands out of each color.  The only problem is the chicks DO NOT LIKE THEM ON THEIR LEGS -at all!  He went around limping and biting at it.  The other chicks also pecked at it, so I removed it.  (I did like how it was pretty easy to attach and remove.)  I don't think it was too tight -more of a neusance?  Should I just band them all and give them more time?  Maybe chicks do this with ALL legbands?

Today is Day7 and Day14 for my eggs. Just a week away from new babies....and 2 weeks away for more new babies.  I'm trying to figure out what to use for a bigger brooder for the new hatchlings.  I have the feeling the (5) Easter Egger chicks will be pretty good flyers so I want something with higher sides.  And, If all 13 Silkies hatch, they'll need more space.  This is what I have now and have used in the past....It has worked fine for up to 6 chicks.  I wish I could find a big box like from a freezer or lawn mower.  Or I could build something out of plywood, but I hate spending money.  Anyone have some better ideas?

It's just a big container.

I think they probably pick at any leg banding.

Have you asked at Lowes for a large box from a display item? I mean those boxes have to go somewhere right? I personally like working with tubs, they are washable, sanatizable, and reusable. I like having several, but I put a ceramic bulb plate on the lid with a dimmer switch. Give me a couple mins and I will see if I can find a pic.

I'm going into lockdown today.  I did take Julie's advice and when I candled them, I was listening for peeping or anybody looking like they were trying to move into the air sac.  Nope, nadda, they are just playing around in their happy little environment!  I keep telling myself I'm not going to see anything until Monday so I might as well just settle myself down here.  Three weeks has been so long!

I am waiting on DH to get home and make a few minor adjustments to my hatching box and will move them over and set the new eggs.

Any more news from anyone?

Cali Chick, I've heard others say they use a big swimming pool.  I don't think they would get out for a little bit, but I don't know how long.

I totally missed you said you have EEs.  I have EEs too.  That's what I bought to go with Miss Pretty.  I absolutely love them.  They are very, very friendly and so pretty to look at.  One of them has a really big fluffy face and head.

I met someone local yesterday who I found on BYC...I was supposed to be talking to her about non GMO food, but she was talking about her EEs and I asked her if she sold hatching eggs!!!!!  I am going to get a dozen when I get everyone else out of the incubators!

How exciting....You all are so lucky that lockdown is here! bun.gif Just think your chicks will be hatched by the time I go into lockdown, which is this Tuesday for my EE and next Tuesday for my Silkies!  WWC-It DID seem like a long 3 weeks! hmm.png Glad to hear you are all getting your brooders ready.  Thanks, Mayberry for the pictures of your nice brooder.  I just hang a brooder light above because I would electricute myself or the chicks if I tried anything as nice as yours!  Hmmmmmmm............I'm wondering if I could find a cheap crib to use on CL.  I could add sides or chicken wire around the edges, but that would make a great "base" for a brooder.  And, it has wheels.

WWC-I can't wait until my EE hatch, next Friday!  The eggs/embryos are so strong that I have a good feeling about the chicks.  They are going to be so cute.  The guy I got the eggs from called them "Americanas" and the parents all had slate legs and the eggs are all blueish, but I'm sure they are Easter Eggers -which is fine with me.  I just hope I get mostly (or all) girls out of these 5 eggs.

I'm going to candle all eggs again tonight, which will be my Day7 and Day14 candling.  I will mark the aircells on the outside of the shell again and compare them with the diagram I have. fl.gif  Hope everything looks good..........I'll let everyone know.  Are all of you candling your eggs before you put them into lockdown today?

I use a swimming pool after about day 7. The first week is a plastic tote with a metal grill over 1 end and a heat lamp set on the grill. If it gets too cold I slide more of the plastic lid over. Too hot and I open a little more. As for the pool it works well for about 2-3 weeks. That's when they start tring to jump/flop out. I have come up with a fix for that. First get cardboard and tape it around the pool. Make sure to make a door so you can clean out. As they grow, you can just tape more cardboard around and support it with almost anything. I used pvc pipes and taped them to the walls. And when the get too big just drape bird net over the top. The thin black net you buy to put over the fruit trees its about $15 for a huge one. If it sags in the middle which mine did. I put a pole in the middle of the pool with a base. Kind of like the ones for the table umbrellas. Lots of room for them to chase crickets around in.
