I'm new to BYC and excited to learn. After 3+ years of talking about it, I finally have the hubby in agreement to get some hens. I also have a friend/neighbor (who also grew up on a farm with chickens) excited about baby-sitting if the need arises.
My only concerns (other than getting the coop and hens/chicks) is that I called the city and they said I had to be agriculturally zoned or on 10 acres in order to have chickens within city limits. So if I go through with it, I'll have to fly under the radar.
I've already talked to my neighbors and they don't care one way or the other what I do as long as I don't get roosters. I'm considering silkies and/or millie fleur hens so the rooster thing shouldn't be an issue. (My friend said to stick with Silkies and if anyone asks to call them 'rare East Asia Bipedial Ground Pigeons'.)
But in all seriousness, I'm wondering if anyone else in my city (or other locations) is flying under the radar and/or has any suggestions or lessons learned?
