Hi,
This hen hadn't layed for almost a year. She went broody, raised a couple of chicks and never seemed to recover. She ate fine but drank more than normal. She spent a lot of time on the floor of the coop, not moving much. She appeared bright and alert. When I would hold her very upright she would gasp as if she wasn't able to breathe properly. I thought I would find internal laying to be the issue, instead I found all this fat in her. This is the first chicken I've opened up that wasn't a grocery store chicken. Would you agree that this chicken has too much fat? I think it was pushing on her internal organs. If you don't think that was the cause of death could you direct me to where I should look for the cause of death?

Graphic photos of a chicken cut open with all the insides exposed! Don't look if you're sqeamish.

Looking under the breast bone.

Breast bone removed.

Just for the curious, these round things are her eggs. Although she hadn't layed in a year she had them.

This is the gizzard. It was really wrapped in fat on both sides.

Thanks for looking and giving me any insight.

Looks completely normal to me. I've processed Cornish with way more fat than that.

Poor girl, sorry for your loss!

Looks like egg peritonitis to me- I think you were right with the internal laying- I don't think that it is fat but the infection you are seeing, hence why she was so thin. The fact that she struggled to breathe whe yo held her shows her internal organs were being pushed as you suggested.

I have no input as I've never seen the inside of the chicken.  I was curious what you were feeding her?

I rotate feed with my flock so that I don't risk giving them too much of one brand that may be a bad batch. So this month it's Purina Layena, next month Kruse's, next month something different. But it's just layer crumble. They free range daily and I have lots of grass and bugs. I give them yogurt weekly. I also treat them daily rotating organic scratch, BOSS, wheat, peas, flax seed, fresh spinach, eggs, oatmeal and fresh fruits.

This makes me feel somewhat better about losing my Silkie hen a few days ago. She did the EXACT same thing as your hen. Sat on and raised 4 chicks for me but never was normal again. Would also sit on the floor, wasnt moving a lot, VERY skinny as well. I was in the process of attempting to hydrate her by pushing fluids and she literally died in my arms. What type of hen is this??? Im relieved to see that other people have experienced this as well because I was very rattled by her sudden death. Ugh.

This was an Australorp, sweet "Muriel". You can see in this picture of her with the new chicks (not hers, although she was a great surrogate mom) her comb was already shrunken some. She probably wasn't feeling well even then, but she raised those two little chicks and they're big and healthy today!

When my hens go broody they loose weight. It takes them a while to recover in both weight and egg production. Why yours wasn't laying for a year I'm not sure. When they aren't laying their combs naturally shrink. Happens to mine when they go broody and when they are molting. I know to expect eggs again when they are nicely full and red again. The fat you have pictures of looks normal, not excessive. All her organs looked healthy. I'm not sure what to suggest as the problem. Just wanted to add my two cents about the weight and comb comments.
