Got our Rooster (Clayton) Jan.14,2012, then a few weeks later got 5 hens from the local Flea Market, one has died. Feb.3,2012 we got 8 baby chicks that were born on Feb.1st,2012, so they were not even 48 hrs old. Today we are going back to St.Elmo Seed and Feed, to get some more Baby chicks, in total I will have about 15 to 20 hens, and have them all name after our (her) friends, favorite Aunts, and our Grandmothers, and our Mothers.

This has become a hobby for both of us, We don't know how old the ones we got from the flea market, we think about 14,to 18 weeks when we got them, and now we have had them about 6 weeks, so they should be 20 to 24 weeks old, we check on the 4 hens and Clayton every day to feed them and change the water, and I check to see if they have  layed the golden egg, (the first egg on  Pollock Hill 20), We do not know when they start laying how many weeks or months, If someone knows this answer plz, help us, or does it have anything to do with the kind of hens?

Thx from the Deep South Alabama

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, age of maturity depends quite a bit upon the breed and type of chicken. Generally, layer breeds and hybrids (auto-sexed mixes) will mature earliest, around 20 - 24 weeks of age. Dual-purpose breeds ( suitable for both eggs and meat) mature more slowly; for example, orpingtons are renowned for not starting to lay until 30-36 weeks. Brahmas and Jersey Giants take even longer.

They should start laying soon. They generally lay at about 20-25 weeks old.
