MARYLAND THREAD!

Yeah, I was reading about how they are hard to sex young, which is a bummer. But I don't really want Silkie roos...what would we do with them, kwim? The black meat kind of does not appeal to me. So I'm willing to pay a good amount and support a breeder to get pullets. I looked at the hatchery chicks and thought twice. While they wont be show birds, and I don't think that we will raise them, I still like to have nice birds. And thanks for the two names!

I did buy an incubator off CL the other day. LOL Turner, fan, thermometers, etc. I am far from ready to hatch eggs, but my kids are excited about it.

M@M@2four and Brody's Broodello have silkies in MD. Friedeggs does too.

Brody's Broodello doesn't have any right now. Just talked to her yesterday. She did have the blue one I mentioned for $40.00. If you can get some when she does though, do it. Absolutely gorgeous birds. I've gotten my Seramas, Ameracaunas, and 2 Splash Silkies from her. My avatar Clarabelle is one of them.

You know who can sniff out a young cockerel in no time at all? Another cockerel! Works like a charm around here. My roo has accurately ID'd undercover roo's disguised as pullets time and time again.
Hatchery Silkies are completely different from the ones from a reputable breeder. Mine have four toes on one foot, five on the other, no beards, and the furry feathers are nothing in comparison to a quality Silkie. It will be worth your wait to hold off until you find one.
Lastly, good luck with your hatching. My first batch are due to hatch Thursday. So far it has been an awesome experience. Keeping my fingers crossed...

I own a 1/2 acre lot 1 mile from Campus Drive, U of Md College Park campus. If anyone would like to use it to raise chickens on just let me know. All I ask is that you treat my land like it was your own and share some eggs with me.

I bought a hygrometer for the incubator at Wal-mart the other day, but since we are going to closing in 13 days (!!) I'm not planning to set it up just yet. While we might not get moved that quickly, if it came down to being able to get us settled on the farm fast, I don't want to mess up a hatch by unplugging the bator for a few hours and transporting it. Besides, I think the basement would be more stable for the bator temperature-wise than our current home with the AC on. My three year old keeps talking about chicks and those darn Silkies! :D

I saw some Silkies on CL, and somebody is offering a breeding pair in the southern MD CL that sounds really nice. But we will wait and watch, and meanwhile, get moved in! Can't wait! It's going to be great to have the horses in the backyard and not in a boarding barn. I might actually get to do more with them than clean stalls....because we are moving away from barns and doing just run-in sheds.

I'm toying with the idea of just buying a coop and having it delivered, like a Horizon coop (the larger versions) or a Green coop (the Elizabeth), but if anybody knows anyone who could build one, I might go that route. I could do it, particularly the Purina coop plans because those look easy, but I have four boys 7 and under, the youngest being 17 months. I get nothing done that involves power tools;) My sewing machines have been silent for months because the littlest gets into trouble the second I take my eyes off him. Outside, I keep him tied to my back to keep him safe, lol. DH works long hours, and when he is off on weekends, I'm at work myself.
