MARYLAND THREAD!

Pics
I am originally from Maryland but now live in Stewartstown, Pa close to the harford county line and also have a small flock of 5 hens, one LF cuckoo marans and 4 bantams (SLW, turken,
Old English and Cochin X)   Been thinking about getting a speckled sussex and black maran so if you ever decide you want to order more let me know and maybe we could combine our
order.

Hi! Great! I was hoping to get a buff orpington or Jersey giant sometime this spring, I'll keep ya updated on if I place an order!

I'm posting this for a friend. The house next door to them was rented for a time to some people who kept chickens. They moved out and left two roosters behind with no food or water and nobody coming by to care for them. The house is currently empty. I know roosters can be hard to rehome, but I was wondering if anyone is interested in adopting a roo or two? I've only seen pictures, but one is a large fowl, barred, looks like a young Barred Rock. The other is a bantam. Blue with blue legs- maybe a Blue Andalusian. Both seem friendly and are currently being fed by my friends. They would prefer that they end up in a caring home and not a stew pot! They are in Calvert County. If interested, or if you have any ideas on finding these poor guys a home, please PM me. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Churchton? Very cool! We ar ein Shady Side. Are you still active on here and in your birding ventures? Would love to meet you and maybe get some tips as we are just beginning the planning process for a small group of about 5-8 hens for eggs in the spring.

hi i live near DC in chesapeake beach or calvert county
Not far from you in Southern AA Co. Would love to get some tips and advice from you. We are new to this as we are just planning for the spring when we hope to get 5-8 chicks so we can have hens for layers once they are old enough.

Since this is the place for MD'ers, I wanted to ask if there is a listing anyone could share of butchers/processors that will take your live birds and do all the work for you and you get to go back and pick up your ready birds? I know many of the Amish in southern MD, St. Mary's and Charles counties probably will, but I know there must be some others that are regulated and do a good job.

Thanks for your help with this one since we have been considering getting a few meat birds this spring. Maybe we, wait, hubby would say that I am being hopeful that my first stint with chickens could be egg layers and meat birds. Will see if I am biting off more than I can chew.

I wish somebody would come up with a processor east of I95 and South of Rt. 50. I asked this question awhile back.
BTW, we are over behind Northern High School. If you have any questions, just ask.

Owings? Very nice to meet you and find someone so fairly close. No local processors then huh? Bummer! I was thinking of ordering a couple meat birds along with our layers for the spring. We have a butcher that goes to our church and owns his own location in Prince Frederick so I will ask him if he can process live chickens or know of someone fairly local that he could suggest. How long have you been a proud chicken owner and what breeds?

From what I can find, and from what I remember when I was working with USDA, there is no regulated place in MD that does poultry on a regular basis. It seems to be DIY or take them to the Amish or Mennonites. The slaughter house in Mt. Airy sold turkeys for the holidays, but I don't think them processed them there. I ran into a local farmer who raises 3-4 lots of broilers a year and sells them at her farm store, ans she says the Mennonites do hers for $2/bird.

We are looking at getting 50-75 meaties in the spring and splitting with a friend who owns a plucker who lives in Friendship/Tracy's Landing.

Friendship/Tracy's Landing is right around the corner from me. Hmmmmm....maybe you and/or said friend are good at processing your own birds and could do someone else's? For a fee of course.
