sod trays - Page 2

I'm glad you posted an update.... I was thinking about building mine in the next week or so.

I just attended a chicken keeping workshop and got a packet of "Chicken Salad" seeds (various greens) from Derek, the owner of MyPetChicken.  My plan is to use either terracotta saucers or plastic long low planters (whichever I find cheap at Odd Lots)  and plant the seeds every couple of weeks near my good sunny garden area..  That way I can bring the plants in and out of the run as they need to be reseeded.  I have also read about plants that were tasty for them (nasturium), good for insecticide/repellant (mint, sage, thyme, rosemary) and plants that were good to hang in the coop or place on nest boxes(mint, basil, lavendar, lemon balm, parsley).  I wil plant all of the in med sized pots and place around the perimemter for their (fingers crossed) heallthful bebefits and to give them for a treat.

Awesome idea! Looks like I need to go buy more seeds to share with the chicks! Off topic a little but does anyone randomely put shovel fulls of compost in their runs for the girls to get at? Unfortunately we can't free range but I am an avid composter.

i toss in grass clippings whenever i mow and they pick at that.  meanwhile being on dirt with poop added, the grass starts to compost then i take it out for the next clippings load. I thought about giving them compost but i don't want to because their poop goes into it and i dont know what else is crawling around in there.
