Hi

We will are new to  chicken raising, I had a few growing up not thats been a long time about 20yrs.We are no going the chick route even though we would love to but we really have no room to raise them in a brooder so we are going to get 5mth olds we are only getting four to start off.

My son and I are working on converting a rabbit hutch a friend gave us to a coop and adding a run, this our Spring Break project. The hutch has a wire floor and I have read many books and magazines and they all say no slippery flooring and that wire isn't good either so does anyone have any suggestions on flooring to put in?  We were thinking astro turf but we didn't want the chickens to think it was grass and peck at it.

I will post pictures as soon as we are done.

Thanks for all the help.

Angie

Welcome to BYC. Alot of people use wire flooring so the droppings fall onto the ground. Mine are in a wooden coop with wood flooring, I use hay as bedding. Others use wood shavings. It's up to you how you want to do it.

welcome-byc.gif from central Texas. I would keep the wire floors, I use rabbit hutches for my birds until I let them out with no problems. But you can put some hay or something in there.

Welcome to BYC, Angie!

I can't think of anything except wood that would work for flooring.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes and the progress of the rabbit hutch modification and making of the run is going well, should be done tomorrow hopefully if the weather holds up. I think we will try to put something down over the wire then cover with hay. Thanks again.
