Chicken disease that can cause blindness in humans????

Long story short, my neighbor, the Lonoke Eye doctor complained about my chickens and said they can spread a disease that causes people to go blind. And that he currently knows of five people going blind because of it. Can't find anything on the Internet about this.....

Histoplasmosis is RAMPANT in and around wild bird roosts. Roosts are places where large numbers of Red Wing Blackbirds, Grackles, and Starlings congregate to roost during the winter. I also would say that histoplasmosis is found living on the newspapers in Parakeet cages.

But since the beginning poster lives in Arkansas (the home of Tyson Poultry) my guess is that every man, woman, and child living there for more than 5 minutes will test positive for histoplasmosis exposure. Big cities also have their fair share of histoplasmosis because of pigeon droppings and bat dung on, in, and around buildings. There is also a danger of catching histoplasmosis if you hangout around BIG trees, so no walk-in-the-park for the good 'doktor'. And forget about exploring caves, histoplasmosis is present in large quantities in bat droppings or guano. In fact an alternative name for histoplasmosis is spelunker's lung.

I can see now why 5 of your doctor friend's patients are losing their eyesight. Because in my estimation, your eye doctor "friend" is a quack who is betting on bird poop, old wives' tails, and lies to force you and/or your chickens to go away. Because histoplasmosis is a fungus I would think that it would be very, very, very, and don't forget extremely difficult for it to effect your vision. At any rate you can't catch histoplasmosis by kissing or even sharing eyeglasses.

I wonder what other actions that your optometrist neighbor believes will make you go blind or even cause one to need glasses?

Please forgive the sarcasm, I needed that. Ah, I feel better now!

Hi Ridestofar,
Well the eye doc doesn't know how long it takes for histoplasmosis to show signs that you have it but she does not see evidence of my having it at this time. She thinks I may have breathed in some of the bacteria that was flying around as I was pressure washing the coop and that made me so sick. Was just about over it in 24 hours anyway so I'm not going to worry about it unless something else crops up. She also said that there is no test for it.

I get so sick and tired of people blaming everything on chickens. If loved and taken care of, chickens are the best and most loving animals on earth. I've had chickens in my life for over 25 years and many of them were and are pets. Some of my best memories are of my pet chickens. And let's not forget all those yummy eggs. I've also had many pet chickens and do now that are house pets and have never gotten sick nor has anyone else. I've hugged and kissed my chickens most of my life with no problems.
