Sexing Chicks

And finally Winnifred/Fred,Copper Black, started out wobbly, now one of the largest, feathering fast, full tail, one of the most feisty! And more white than I'd expect for a CB..
Maybe some cuckoo in there?..

So how reliable is sexing done by the commercial hatcheries? I was told by the breeder I got my chicks from that vent sexing often damaged the chicks and was not done. If I order 15 pullets from Meyer or somebody, how likely am I to get 15 pullets?

Improperly done vent sexing can be damaging, yes, but so can anything done improperly. Most hatcheries advertise a 90-95% accuracy for their vent sexed chicks. This past spring we started 16 day old sexed pullets and wound up with only one cockerel. If you want really want only pullets I would suggest choosing sex-lined hybrids or auto-sexing breeds....or purchasing started birds who have reached the age of gender clarity.
