I have a trio of copper marans that are about 6 months old and the male already has chicks about to hatch with an EE

When could i expect the pullets to lay? how can i tell when there about to lay?

Hi there-

I have two Black Copper Marans and they just FINALLY started laying.  They are 30 weeks old.  I do not think that they will always take this long, but truthfully I don't know since they are my first BCM hens.  I do know that generally, when a hen will start laying is directly related to health, happiness, warm weather vs. cold weather, and amount of sunlight in a day (more is better).  Basically, a young pullet is not as likely to start laying in the middle of winter.  Blessings!

Ours lay around 6 months. Last year's July hatches started right around New Years. You can tell by the comb-- it gets larger and red.

If I had known a few chickens would make the man THAT happy....
mom & dad, teaching our rescue BRT Bess all about chickens, EE, Orps and now marans!  The man says we are switching to orps and marans, and they'reHISchickens!
