can anyone describe a turkey egg to me...or better still if you have a photo of some next to chicken eggs?

my toms have been mounting the girls for weeks now..but as of yet not a single turkey egg (i think) unless they look so similar to chicken eggs ive been getting them mixed up? but im guessing turkeys wouldnt go in the chicken houses to lay......

thanks in advance!

thanks for the pics. well ive definatly not had any nice speckldy ones like the top pic so nope dont think they are laying yet. is it perhaps a bit too early in the year? weather has only just warmed up this week (yesterday to be precise)

If your turkeys free range then they could be laying and you don't know it! You won't mix up turkey eggs with chicken eggs. Also, when you go to crack a chicken egg, you will notice a very thick membrane inside the egg.

My tom typically starts breeding the hens in February but they don't lay any eggs until the last week of March.

I doubt you will mistake a turkey egg for a chicken egg. My turkey eggs are normally 1 1/2 to 2 times bigger than the chicken eggs.

It is possible for a turkey hen to lay in a chicken nest box but it is not normal. I have only ever had one turkey hen lay in the chicken nest boxes and she was hanging half way out trying to fit in it. Mostly they like to hide their nests and sometimes it can be quite a job to find the nest. If you do find a turkey nest, it is best to leave an egg or a fake egg rather than taking all of the eggs. Taking all of the eggs can cause the hen to make a new nest in a better hidden location.

Good luck.

Ok, believe I have some good pictures for you to compare turkey eggs to chicken eggs. I have a gray slate and royal palm that lay and placed their eggs next to my brown and white laying chicken hens eggs for your educational value whatever it may hold. Lol.

So, the egg on the far left is a nice developed gray slate, spotted turkey egg. Top point with nice heavy bottom and not well spotted but faint tan spots but obviously larger than chicken egg which is the next egg to the right. Third egg to right is a pullet royal palm turkey egg. Small, almost chicken egg size, but yet has nice top point and obvious heavy bottom and tan spots but yet more the size of a chicken eggs. This was Nora's first egg therefore it will be smaller. The next egg to the right is another gray slate turkey egg but less spots. Still pointed and heavy bottom, larger egg. Sometimes their eggs will resemble more like a chicken egg but you can always tell by the shape....pointed top and pear shape bottom. Last egg, far right, is my Nella egg, which is my Polish chicken. Still a bit pointy but quite a bit smaller.

This shows you a different view of the eggs. If you look at them from the bottom, you can see the width difference and definitely the spots as well.

Hope this helps. I was truly tickled when my hens started laying so soon, 8 months old. Everyone told me it wouldn't be til Spring. AND, they both lay in the lil chicken boxes religiously unless they don't stay in coop over night. Than they nest outside, which can be a game to find eggs. Otherwise, never a problem. Love, love, love my turkeys. Have fun!!!! I'm so excited to start breeding this coming spring. Good luck.

Meet Norman and Nora. Lol

Ok, my royal palm, Nora, just dropped an egg dead center middle of the yard, why, who knows. But, wanted you to see since she is still new at the egg laying game, how little her eggs are and how similar her eggs look to chicken eggs other than than faint spots. Merry Christmas!

Nora's egg is on bottom.

View of all my turkey eggs. Gives you an idea that everything comes in all sizes. Royal palm on bottom and Nora's are other two.
