My Speckled Sussex gone broody?

Thread Starter

I have not every dealt with a broody hen.

About 3-4 nights ago, I found that my speckled sussex began spending the night in the nesting box.  She is fairly aggressive when I check eggs under her.  I watcher her lay an egg yesterday, even though she has been spending all her time in the box keeping golf balls warm :)

I have eggs in the incubator (11 on day 8 and 9 on day 3).  I am building a brooder box tomorrow, so I can try to move her tomorrow night.

Should I feel comfortable moving her and adding the 11 eggs in a couple of days?

She may be headed toward broodiness, but I don't think she's really there if she laid an egg.  I'd watch her a while longer.  Or, move her and watch her.  Moving a broody can break the broodiness.  Some feel this is less likely if you move the whole nest, or at least the nesting material.  If she really does go broody, you should be able to give her some incubated chicks to mother, if you want.
