i went to TSC the other day and bought a few chicks, i also bought 12 chicks from the "Red Production" bin all but 3 of them look like i would have expected with a red color coming in as feathers
EX:

but the other 3 look more like a buff color to me.. is there a chance that the 2 breeds were mixed up and put in the same bin? Or is it that the other 3 are just really bad quality?
EX:

to be honest im kinda hoping for them to be buff orpingtons

Did the yellow chicks have little black spec's on them scattered here and there when you bought them ?

I ask because I purchased a dozen from TSC just over a week ago.

I got 6 out of the production red trough and they are red with some brown and black on their wing feathers. Really pretty and I got 6 out of the yellow chick trough.

The yellow chick trough had up a sign that said they had the potential of being : Isa Brown , Black Sex Link ( really ??? they're yellow ) ,Rhode Island Reds, or Barred Rocks.

From the photos I've seen on line, none of those breeds fit the yellow chicks with black speck's scattered here and there on them.

I bought very lightly colored "red pullets" at TSC and I think decided they are gold comets or similar. They are still buff colored but one or two (of 4) seem to be growing in some darker reddish feathers. Comets are red over white/buff, so it makes sense for them to be buff to start.

ETA: I have never had red birds before so am not familiar with their feathering patterns, but if those chicks were unsexed I'm pretty sure the bottom ones are hens and the top ones, roosters. I hear they come to a great table weight for production birds.

no they didnt have any spec's, but they did have two lines going down their back which was a little darker than the rest of the coloring which could have been easily missed (the red produtions) but the buff colored ones were one solid color.

i also bought them from the pullet bin so i dont think that the are sex linked

they have feathered out a little more so ill try to post more pics
