I noticed today while I was cleaning the coop that one of my girls has lost all her feathers on one of her breast. She seems to be fine but her skin is smooth just like a breast from the store. What is wrong with her? If anyone could please help me. I'm new at this, have had them for a year. They are Rhode Islands. Shes not acting funny. Someone told me that it could be the hay and shes impacted. It looks like she never had feathers there. Or could it be mites? PLEASE I NEED HELP

She might be about to go broody. Hens who are broody pluck out their breast feathers so that their skin is next to the eggs to keep them warmer. Are the feathers in a nest box?

No I saw no feathers in the nesting box. Very few any where else. It's so weird the breast is so smooth.

The feathers don't necessarily need to be found in the nest. They pull out their breast feathers when they go broody. But seeing as how it is only March, I wouldn't let her have any eggs. Its WAY too cold for chicks at this time of year. Of course, I don't know where you live but summer is the time for broody's having chicks running around. Does she stay on the nest when you reach under her? Does she peck your hand?
