Set eggs 3/17.... Anyone else?

I set my eggs today... Well yesterday since it is after midnight... Anyway, this is my first hatch!!!!! I am so excited! I was hoping to find others that also set around the same time so we can compare notes along the way.

I set Lavender Orpingtons in a hovabator genesis 1588 with automatic egg turner. I have more eggs coming in the mail but since the weekend hit, I will not get them until Monday at the earliest. I had to get these in so I guess I will have a staggered hatch.

Theses Lavender Orpington eggs are my own eggs. I have 7 pullets that just started laying a coup,e weeks ago. I cracked open eggs until I finally got fertile eggs. Crossing my fingers that these are good eggs.

Anyone out there wanna be hatch buddies?

Yes.  I just turned on the incubator with 40 EE  this morning 3/18 and  started reading on line. Then I decided to sign up and participate  instead of just reading. Been reading about a year now  since I brought the EE's home.

So I should have  few hours of heads up notice when yours start to cheep. Had raised chickens as a kid for a few years and didn't want to do Leghorns or Rhode Island Reds this time so I picked  Easter Eggers all pullets and ended up with a rooster also. This year the goal is to get a few more Blues to  raise (just really like the coloring and seems more social).  I saw you had  lavender Orps and thought  this is a good match.  My older brother is retired Navy and lives near Fredricksburg and had raised chickens  with me when we were kids. Will check in every night  or at egg turning time as they are next to the computer for the next three weeks. Should be fun. Thanks for starting this post and inviting others. I'm in Michigan.

Awesome! Congrats! How cool that this is your very first post on BYC. I also did not sign up for a long time after finding the site. I just read a lot. After is finally signed up then it took off! I love the interaction. I love being able to post questions and get answers almost immediately. I have NEVER raised chickens in my life till last year. I have learned so much on here. So welcome to BYC!

I love EEs. I mentioned that I had shipped hatching eggs on the way... Well they consist of 6 blue wheaten amerucanas (which lay the blue eggs), 6 salmon faverolles LF, and 6 golden cuckoo Marans (really dark brown egg). I am going to put them in a second incubator once they arrive. PO is taking their good sweet time getting them to me so I am afraid they will not have as good a chance as I would wish.

I am excited to get some color variation in the eggs!

Right now I have the lavender orps and b/b/s orps. My b/b/s orps are not laying yet, however.

So what type of incubator are you using? I see you are hand turning! What a job! I got the automatic egg turner because I was worried I would mess things up.

Welcome Tina... Another newbie to hatching! I just set mine last night around 5 pm and I have gone and looked at the eggs like 100 times! I have an egg turner and am now actually wishing I had to turn by hand so that I could have some type of interaction with the eggs! I am sick of just looking at them. They always look the same! Just sometimes they are tilted to one side and sometimes they are tilted the other way.

My humidity has been steady between 46 to 48% and my temp have been between 99.9 and 100.3

Just got home and turned all 40. More than willing to trade you interaction for an egg turner. Not minding the  labor but thinking if I drop one of these... 40 X 3 times a day X 21 days  could just be 2,520 chances of a scramble. Hey just looked at the label and it's a Little Giant too no fan no turner. Been in the basement  many years never used. Holding at 99 F but  stuck a Wally World temp /humidity gauge and showing 33%. Small piece of towel soaked and tucked into one corner to get more moisture. Now thinking a small computer fan on a repeat cycle timer is needed.   I remember the last hatch I did was  9 found pheasant eggs in a field put  in a box with a light bulb and tin foil and a mason jar lid for water with a  baby thermometer, about 1970 had 1 hatch. Must do better.

Okay... I take it back... I appreciate my egg turner! Lol... I have seen a lot of those home made incubators on here and was considering building one out of a dorm size refrigerator I have in the bedroom.

Temp was solid 99 this morning, humidity was 30%. Added more water and opened the wet towel a bit more. If it does not go up to 50% today it gets a bubblier with a separate water holder. Eggs were rolling around a bit while doing the morning turn. I will get better or  find a turner which is just sounding so practical.

Noon turning and the temp is good and humidity was at 60 % so the wet terry cloth brought it way up. Aiming for 50% till lock down.  Cut up some egg cartons to perch the eggs in so they don't keep rolling around while  turning. Smaller eggs or bigger cartons would work better as  am trying to keep them just a little slanted pointy end lower.
