ok just because I HAVE to know....why and how and where in a BASEMENT are you PLANTING cukes?? Sounds like you are planting them INTO their permanent placement? HOW? in a basement? inquiring minds and all that!

I was in the basement planting some sprouted cuke seeds into their new homes. I turn around, walk towards the basement door, lost in my own seed starting world, when a big black rat goes scurrying by my feet and under the table. I scream at the top of my lungs, BF comes rushing down. I explain that a ginormous rat just scurried by... and that he has to kill it. He gets a flashlight and peers under the table in the basement. Starts laughing. Yeah, it's an escaped black chick.

I swear it was a rat.

He's named it Ratty.

They've now lost heat lamp privileges so I can close the top to their brooder. It's about that time, anyway.

 One of my "quiet visits" to the project Ameraucana pen (Lav's mostly)  IT so calming to sit and visit and let the birds come say hi and chitter at me while they stroll up and down whatever is sticking out...legs arms DONKEY they arent picky about it...Very sweet birds and friendly they will snuggle down in your lap and stay as long as you will hold them. APPLEJACK wants to be a part of eveything and will PARK in your path to be loved on... you can just pat him or scrub him raw with scratching and love and he will take it all...he will come to you no matter how far it is for him to walk and will just come and stand beside you until you give him attention.

Can I or is it advisable to take a warm egg from the hen and put them directly in the incubator or do they HAVE to set set in a cool place for a day or so then brought to room temp before placing in incubator.

The incubator is in my basement where it is cool 60-70F . is it possible that when I open the door to turn the eggs it gets too cool for the eggs. Door is only open short time to turn eggs.

Move to Alabama, we never get any snow, at least not below I-59 / I-20!  My kids have never seen a snow that didn't turn to mud well before noon.  I wish they could see one good 10" snow (and have it last for two or three days,) while they are still young enough to really enjoy it.

I have white beltsville turkeys in Nova Scotia, Canada. Here is my question. Have had 1 hatch but nothing in the last month. Current incubator is an old fridge with shelves that tilt and eggs placed broad end up.Tilting eggs 3-4 times a day. Setting eggs flat on side after 25 days. Temp is 100 F and 50-75 HUM through out.The incubator is in my basement where it is cool 60-70F . is it possible that when I open the door to turn the eggs it gets too cool for the eggs. Door is only open short time to turn eggs.  *** any help on this is greatly appreciated, PS I stopped washing the eggs and just clean them off with dry towl.

Highly unlikely that this has anything to do with a bad hatch. Remember, even the moms get off the nest daily to eat, drink and poop.

So I candled again... (my straightjacket was in the wash)

And made some executive decisions...

• Removed 1/2 silkie eggs due to hatch Saturday.

• Removed 5/8 turkey eggs.

• Removed 1 blue chicken egg from Dsqard.

That leaves 1 silkie, 3 blue eggs, and 3 turkey eggs. This might just be my most manageable hatch, ever. Well, after that Trader Joe hatching fiasco of 0%...

I eggtopsied all the eggs, and they were all "clear."

This humidity seems high to me.  I'm following the dry hatch per CHookschicks cheet sheet.  The %RH in the room is running about 50%; inside the incubator is running about 30%. ( I used the same device and move it back and forth.)  I was raining here for a few days, over cast and drizzly, and still the %RH stayed low and didn't budge.  THe eggs need to dry out quite a bit; if it was a chicken egg, I would say 11-14% weight loss, I assume this generally applies to turkeys. How big does the air cell look?  Is it big enough? If you need pics, we can find one for you.   Bump humidity up at lockdown to 80% if you follow Porters instructions.
