I am using a friend's Brinsea Octo 20 for this hatch, I fit 24 turkey eggs in it! I am most proud of the cabinet incubator I just built for experimentation, I wanted to play around and tweak it this year so we wouldn't have to buy poults from the hatchery next year. I set 30 turkey and 3 guinea eggs in it on April 2, I had very low expectations since some of the eggs were 17 days old and it was my first attempt. I candled them on Sat (day 12) and 24/30 and 3/3 were developing! I can't believe it, I prepared myself to be happy if at least 1 hatched. My expectations were also low because my temps fluctuated more then I would have liked the first week, I still can't believe how well they're doing, I can't wait to candle this batch! I had no idea how addictive incubating would be, I'm glad I built a cabinet that could hold 15 doz eggs! As I write this I have another 18 turkey eggs sitting next to me on the table waiting to reach room temperature, then into the bator! I'm building the hatcher this week and I  bought 2 more turkey hens last week, so that makes 5... I think my husband is starting to get concerned :) I attribute most of my success to the wealth of knowledge I've found on this site but I also blame it for my addiction :)

So true! It is a double edged sword for sure.

You can get them on eBay or at wal-mart

What are these for anyway? I saw you post to find them in the toy section but I'm still confused!

I try to free range, because it's fun to watch them and they can get natural food and it entertains them as well.

I swear folks around here think $1 a dozen is too much. That doesn't even cover the cost of my time to wash them somad.gif So I kind of gave up trying to sell. I've got a few regulars but except for them forget it. The cats and chickens love the extras and they don't care if I washed before I boiled them.

A new customer mentioned the number of places he's been over the years --at 2$ a carton they can't stay in business. At the farmers market its $6 a carton.

if it's in an egg... it works!

X2  Chick-among-us there are a few people just hatching chicks I think.  Just PM your name to Chooks so you are added to the list and we are requiring everyone to select a favorite color and tell us the size straight jacket you wear.  Right now we have a contest running if you look back in the thread.  I know Renee is busy right now so if you don't get "officially" added to the list this week, you are "officially" considered in for the contest cool.png

We have craptacular weather today for flying but need the rain.

Chook said she was very busy this week . .  so please don't get concerned if she doesn't post your name right  away.

Well air temp can fluctuate a few degrees quite rapidly. what I am concerned with is the temp of the eggs as the temp of the egg can be 99deg and the air temp in the incubator can have a short spike say to 104 deg The egg temp might only go up to 99.5 deg during the spike before the air temp comes back to normal. one might stress about the temp spike not realizing that it did not actually effect the egg in essence. So in using these water wigglers mimics more accurately what is actually happening to the egg. you can stick a temp probe for a remote thermometer inside it or a lollipop type thermometer inside it, inside the bator at the same level as the eggs, so if and when you see a temp drop or spike in temp you do not have to wonder what the temp is of the egg or if the temp fluctuation effected the egg all that much. they do make egg type thermometers designed to sit in a turner or alongside the eggs in the bator. The water wiggler is a much, much less expensive alternative to those and performs the exact same function.

Thank you Jessie!! I didn't know what to look for !!

I've got people coming by tonight to look at the Easter chicks.  I have to find a diplomatic way to tell this lady she is wrong, without just sounding like I'm trying to increase the sale.  She wants to buy ONE chick.  I need to explain why that is wrong for the chick.  Anyway, this was our conversation.

W:  Do you have any black New Jersey chickens?

Me:  No, they are mostly welsummer mixes, a few pure welsummer and a few EE/OE.

W:  Oh, I have a black New Jersey chicken that is sitting on eggs, but I don't have a rooster.  I read on the internet you can trade a chick at night for her eggs, but it must be the same color as the hen so she will accept the chick.

Me:  Well, I don't have any Jersey Giant chicks, but I do have black chicks.  They are BSL & BA crosses.

W:  Okay, I'll stop on my way home from work to get one.

Now mind you, I'm only asking $2 for these chicks, straight run.  I'm going to let her pick and try to convince her to take a few.  If she picks one of the BSL with the cute white spot........ummm, she needs a rooster, right?

Deb

The difference between breakfast and chicks, is the temperature you use to "cook" the eggs!

What breeds do I have?  More than any sane person would own.

Sounds like some creative conning I mean conversation is going to happen to guide this misguided soul towards what is really needed. Not just satisfying a fancy. I too think she needs more than one three at the minimum. Go get her!

Deb in my ad I stated the least amount I would sell at one time was two just so people would know that singletons weren't gonna happen.  Maybe consider this in the future?  Funny some of the things people think although I do have to say I wouldn't know the amount I do now about chickens if I hadn't found this site.

If she insists on just one, make it one of the fluffy black ones with the cute white dot on it's head.  Then she won't have to get any more chicks for her hen, she can raise her own!

I broke down and pulled five of the eggs from the broody, she has no trouble covering 20 eggs!  Those five went in the bator and will be a week behind.  Oh, and I stuck two Campine/SLW/Ameraucana eggs in, too.
