I have some wood frame windows that I would like to install in my chicken coop. I have notice that some people have put the hinges on the bottom thus allowing them to open from the top. Wouldn't this just channel rain into the coop during the spring and summer? Is there a hidden purpose that I'm not getting? I was thinking I would hinge mine at the top thus allowing summer ventilation while keep out the elements. Any suggestions? Maybe left or right hinges instead? haha Thanks for the help.

I turned mine sideways and open the right side. It works out great because my roosts are right next to the left side, so it still gets ventilation without having a draft.

Top of the window(s) swing in.  Make provision so chickend don't roost on the top of the open window.

 

Top of the window(s) swing out.  Make sure you have enough roof overhang so the rain doesn't channel into the coop.

The top windows on my coop are hinged at the top, to help keep the rain out.  The side windows are on sliding tracks, in the warmer months,  the windows are just slid out of the way.

That's a great idea! I ended up hinging mine on the top so that they can swing out. I think they will open enough to provide adequate ventilation in the summer. I will screen them from the inside to keep out predators.

I agree with you and mine are hinged at the top to swing out and have screen on the inside except for one that just slides down inside the wall to open.  Regards,  Woody
