Adding new parakeet?

My Mom in law has had a parakeet for several years that has been alone(mate died of egg binding).  I know parakeets are social birds but has he been alone for too long to tolerate another? If so should it be a female or does it matter?

Honestly I don't remember if they are supposed to be same sex if you don't want to breed, but If you have two cages and start with the cages apart then closer and closer till the cages are next to each other when they try to groom or nestle near each other then they can go in together.

If he seems unhappy I'd find him a friend, if he gets lots of interaction the humans are the flock and he's happy.

If you get another get a male since he's an older bird trying to breed would cause him problems. And would cause her problems.
