I have 2 hawk attacks in 2 weeks, Lady GaGa died and I was able to do surgery on Snow White and she lived. Since these two attacks I've kept my girls in their coop a lot more than they are used to. They only get out for 2-4 hours a day.

Now Omelet is egg bound (thought it was respiratory but it now seems more like this) and in ICU and her sister Peep (3 year old Golden Comet) joined her today because she is limping. I can't figure out what foot she is limping on. I have palpated her legs and there are no breaks. I have pressed on all the spots all over the foot and she doesn't react in pain. I don't see anything in her foot. The first picture has a dark spot on the pad that I can't get off. That looks like the bumble foot pictures though her foot isn't swollen or painful. The second picture has a red mark but is kinda blurry, I'll try to get another one. There is no scab on that foot. It just looks like a rug burn or something like that. The red looks under the skin if that makes sense. It's not painful either.

BUT... something is making her limp! I don't want to do surgery on the wrong foot!

I just got home from 2 lacrosse games and I still have to soak Omelet in her 30 minute warm bath. I might wait until tomorrow to soak Peeps feet to work on her.

Can you tell if either one needs surgery or do you need better pictures?

The second pic is what probably causing her problems. It might be a bruise instead of bumble foot or the beginning of bumble foot... Or something stuck in her foot like a splinter. I would soak the foot and look to see if you see anything imbedded in it, if not I'd leave it for now until something more developed as their might not be anything to dig out right now.

chickenzoo,

Thank you so much. That is what I will do. I will just soak both feet... epson salt soak? Do you think I need to bandage the 2nd foot?

You just don't know how happy you made me. I was so not looking forward to the bumble foot surgery that I saw on youtube. In the last month, I've learned how to clean out and care for hawk wounds, including doing surgery on her hole in her crop (yep watched youtube and superglued the wounds in her crop!), I am treating one who is eggbound and the warm baths don't seem to be helping... getting penicillin tomorrow because I have the wrong antibiotic, and now I'm soaking feet. I've only had my girls for 3 years and this is the first of the illnesses... it comes in threes. Let this be it please!

Lol, I was terrified of needles before I got chickens... Now I have almost become a chicken vet... Hehe. I've learned more about things then I ever wanted to having chickens. Yes, an Epsom salt soak would be good... Just keep an eye on it and see how it progresses. If it gets worse you can get some itchamol drawling sav for horses, and apply it to the foot and wrap it in vet wrap, but for now I'd just do what we mentioned.
Like your avatar... Is that a Sultan or white Polish? I love my Sultans,, hehe

Hi!

I did the Epson soak and I figured out which one she's limping on. The winner is ... pic #1! She's holding it up some today.That tiny little black thing in her pad (not on her toes) is a scab but her foot isn't even swollen. I thought it might be a splinter of some sort, but it's not. The bath softened up the skin enough to see that it was a teeny tiny scab. Only I would get a chicken with a low threshold for pain.

So anyways, I will continue the salt soaks in hopes it helps. I will soak her three times a day. Might as well... she's in my family room lol. Should I put her on antibiotics? I have the Duramycin-10 (Tetracycline Hydrocloride) that goes in the water as well as Penicillin injectable I got this morning.

Thanks =)
Dawn

BTW.. My avatar was my sweetest chicken ever. She was a Sultan named Lady GaGa. A Hawk got her and she was so small, she didn't survive the attack. I couldn't save her. She would run to me and sit in my lap for hours if I let her. She wanted to be held and carried around the yard. She was my princess and I miss her!

I dont think she needs an antibiotic just let, maybe some neosporine on the scab..... If it starts looking inflamed or irritated, then I'd think about antibiotics.

Sorry about your girl..... My avatar is my Sophie the Diva chicken who I lost in Jan.... Miss her very very much.
