I'm doing a test run on my Hercules Hatcher before I try a full hatch with it. The eggs go in that hatcher on Wednesday.

Wish me luck.  Lockdown is on Thursday night and my DH will be in charge of all for next few days.  Hope it goes well as have 8 saxony ready to go. fl.gif

Blessed with a wonderful spouse and kids along with a multitude of animals.  My chickens are mostly blue copper marans but a few "fun" ones and my dd lavender bantam ameracauna's and serama's as well. I also really enjoy my saxony ducks and call ducks.

DO any of you know if a broody duck can have ducklings slipped under her like a hen??  I have an East Indie who has been broody over a week and saxony's due this Sunday.  Do you think I could move her in the dark onto a nest and slip in ducklings?  She can't have them in the pen she is in as their is a inset pool the ducklings would likely drowned in.

Thanks for advicecaf.gif

Her "kids" will be bigger than her in no time!

It can be done but you need to monitor closely to make sure she doesn't reject the babies. I prefer to do the switch in the dark, but she may peck and bite at you when she hears the peeping.

Well, 6 ducklings out of 9 the broody left in the freezing cold.  1 didn't look good early so I tossed (sort of think I was premature, but too late now) but the other 8 developed.  I lost 2 in the shell again, sigh but 6 on the ground.  One looks a little ragged but still wet and soggy so giving it a while.  I'm happy considering it was just a "heck" let's throw the eggs we have on the counter and in the fridge (for a week I might add) under a hen.  big_smile.png
