setting eggs tomorrow.... 3-21-12 who wants to join? - Page 12

Yep, Sunday morning mine will go into lockdown.

I opted to try a dry hatch this time 'round. I don't know how "dry" mine has been - since spring has sprung, we've had increased humidity (and the heat hasn't been running in the house drying the air out) - Mine's been holding pretty steady around 30% the whole time.  I guess I'll add some water on Sunday morning and hope for the best!!!

At the very beginning, 3 weeks seems so far out, and now that the date is right around the corner, it seems to have gotten here so fast! LOL!

I have next week off, and I intentionally planned a hatch for that week, as my kids will be on spring break - I have a feeling we'll be spending some time inside by the incubator! 

Lock down is Fri. for me with 22 in the hatcher and 8 under a hen.  The eggs are the same age.  So far I have tossed 4 eggs because they were clear or blood ringed.   I am sooo excited.  I have NH,Del,and Marans.   Gloria Jean

We go into lockdown on Saturday.  I'm glad I work Saturday, we're visiting family Sunday, and I work Monday and Tuesday, otherwise I'm sure I'd be peeking in on the incubator far too often over the next few days! 

I keep a cheap (like $0.50) notepad next to the incubator and jot down short notes.  Generally what time I turned, since I turn by hand, and what the temp. and humidity were, and how much they dropped while the incubator was open.  My candling notes are pretty sad compared to yours, I just noted the number of eggs that seemed to be developing on track, the number that were questionable (and sometimes why I felt they were questionable), and any that were tossed.  I doubt it's any more efficient than the recipe cards you're using, but it sure does help me remember that I turned (or didn't turn) the eggs and when.

I am confused on lockdown. My brinsea seems like it keeps turning longer than what people around here say it should. It seems like it stops turning at the end of day 19 (or is it the beginning?).

Anyway, I set the eggs around 2pm or so on Tuesday, 3/20. I'm not sure when they'll go into lockdown.

To make things more complicated, I have to transport the eggs back to the school on Monday morning. I'm really having anxiety about transporting them at that point. Do I take them out of the incubator and put them in an egg carton? There will be a bigger temperature drop, but they'll be a lot more stable.  It's about a 10-15 minute drive. Weather is supposed to be great, I can use a blanket to help insulate.

I'd love to hear what you all think.

Could you get a styrofoam cooler maybe to put the eggs in along with a few heat sinks (hot/cold packs or socks filled with rice nuked in the microwave to warm them up) for the drive?  For 10-15 minutes the temperature drop probably won't make much of a difference.  But if you could wrap the egg carton in a towel or blanket and put it in an insulated carrying case of some kind with something to help warm up the space it would probably be better.

YAY!  I just turned the eggs for the night and out of curiosity I candled the one egg that we thought may be bad on Tuesday.  It looks darker than it did on Tuesday, and when I tapped lightly on the shell I saw a little bit of movement!  So right now that puts me at 18 eggs still viable.  If all of them make it, that would put us at 18/32...or 18/19 if you don't count the ones that were never fertile to begin with.  Now I'm really glad we didn't toss that egg on Tuesday.

hello everyone...........ok had 44 eggs........40 mutts and 4 purebreed orphingtons........i had 100% fertile eggs but messed up this morning while turning my tray fell on eggs and lost 3 of my purebreed orphingtons.....so now i have 40 mutts and one purebreed......lockdown on sunday at 9pm........eggs due on wed...........i already have 4 hatched on bator used for marathon and its barely lockdown today for them and got 12 pipping..........also i just set 150 mutts on my fridgebator today is day one for me ..............20 more days to go..................i'll have updates on the 150 eggs thread i posted...........GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!.............
