I am currently using one very similar to the first one shown in the link below. I borrowed it from a friend, but intend to build my own soon - doesn't look terribly difficult at all.

yea maran eggs are so dark! try it, if it doesnt do the trick try a LED with high lumens. mine is a 250 lumen and my eggs are light brown but im sure it would work with the darker eggs aswell. i paid $30 for it at walmart in the camping section.!

I just found this thread but I have set my first ever batch of eggs on the 21st.   I have a dozen bcms, another 1 and1/2 doz of the Delaware and German NH.  I have a Hovabator with the new electronic thing.  I tested it for a wk with thrermometers, and hygrometers and it was so close i took them out and use the display.  I have not candled.   It is humming right along and I am afraid to do any thing at this point.  I have had to add water three times so far.

Can I join?  Gloria Jean

Wow, that is an expensive flashlight!  The one I use is just part of a combo pack that I got at Costco, and it definitely didn't cost that much- my kids lose nice things, so we can't have them.  I haven't had a lot of luck candling marans eggs though.

Welcome to the thread, Gloria Jean!

lau.gif   " my kids lose nice things, so we can't have them." I know how that is! I have four kids, 8, 6, 3, and 10 months! 3 boys and a girl! LOL. the flashlight is actually one of my hubbys "man tools" hes just kind enough (or knows better) to let me use it....

We get our moneys worth for us, cause we go camping, walking, biking, and use it for eggs and other random things like, FORTS!

hahahhahaha!

I can see the children into the flashlights.  My Son has a son that takes everything apart to see how it works.  Flashlights are a major problem.  My Son has hidden them , punished, nothing works.  I even gave each child one, hopeing my Sons would last a while.  They admit they did it but alas ,there is always a piece missing!

How long can you hold an egg out for candleing? I am afraid of the temp in the incubator dropping and the egg being ruined.barnie.gif  This waitting is killing me.  I am only on day 7 Two more weeks to go. Gloria Jean

Just found this thread, can I join? I set 7 eggs on the 21st. I have call duck eggs, my first time with them. They are assorted colors, so it will be a surprise when they hatch. I'm using my Brinsea Mini Advance, love that little machine.
