"Shipping boxes for chickens are unable to supply water due to spilling and leakage, though some shippers supply fruit such as apples or oranges. (I had a friend that shipped canaries around the world. He hot glued orange halves into clean tuna cans and hot glued the cans to the floor of the shipping box.)"  from http://www.raising-chickens.org/shipping-boxes-for-chickens.html

potatoes also have a fair amount of moisture in them and might last a little longer than fruit. since his trip wont take too long either way  would probably work.

Good Luck!

I've not shipped before, but I've been watching you two on the roo.  I think you have to buy a live bird shipping box. It will have lots of vent holes.  I don't think you can put him in a regular box.  And I was told by a person who ships to use apples and put pine shavings down in the bottom of the box.

Thanks for the help.  We figured out the the post office is the only one that'll take him.  And yes it has to be some special fancy filtered box.  And we'll ship him overnight so it will be a pretty quick turnaround.  I'll make sure there is an apple and/or orange in there for him.  He probably won't eat much because of the disturbance but it is better to be safe than sorry.

I don't want to send him at the end of the week in case something happens and he gets stuck in a PO some place.  So I would figure Monday is when he'd get shipped out so there isn't any chance of that.  I'm sure glad things worked out for Jack!

I don't know what made me stumble across this thread, but now I have to know if Jack arrived safe and sound, and if he's happy in his new home!  You are both very sweet to have gone to all this trouble for him.  He is a lucky roo!  clap.gif

Actually we had to many complications on shipping a full grown roo.  I'm still trying to find a local home for him.  I'm trying to reach a vet that is supposed to have something like a Rooster Rescue at her place.  And the local Humane Society has a no kill policy so that is another alternative.  Unless you happen to be in the Spokane/CdA area and want a really pretty roo?wink.png

Aww, I'm sorry it didn't work out.  I would love to take him, but unfortunately I'm not allowed to have roos where I live.  I will keep my fingers crossed that you're able to find a good home for him!  He is certainly a handsome boy.  smile.png
