"Settling" Shipped Eggs: Necessary? With Auto-Turner? - Page 9

because i live in humid climate, it is a challenge for me to get air cells in a styrofoam incubator to grow to recomended size by day 14... so i try to run mine between 20  and 30%..if i add any water its usually shoots my humidity way too high. to make it work for me..you just have to adapt this to your region..if you live in arizona  you might run it just a little higher than that...the secret is to print out that chart that is in here somewhere  it is a hand drawn picture of what your air cell should look like at day 7 when candeling..then again on day 14... some will be slightly larger or smaller :than  the chart and dont let that worry you..its just that some eggs especially dark maran eggs are less pourous and do not evaporate as quickly.. for a long long time i had a printed copy of that hanging on the wall next to incubator for reference..

 

 

and i cannot beleive you found that cheat sheet..i also posted the redwood shipped eggs recomended incubation tips back a page or 2... it just makes perfect sence.i looked and looked for that lat night..well i hope this helps to deal with shipped eggs...

i use the brinsea candler..the high powered one can see through those dark eggs..it has a nice rubber ring on it so i dont accidently crack an egg..in regular brown eggs i can see veins bits and everything..but lot of people trick out flashlights and get same effect ..for less money..i never was any good at doing that thou..

 

with fertile eggs losing their vialibity after 10 days i question that.you have to take into acct shipping in those 10 days 

Thanks for the input everyone.  No I didn't candle them. Like I said this is is my first batch, so I didn't know what I would have been looking for anyway. They were packaged extremely well, I was impressed.  I just didn't think about the 30.000 foot air plane ride in freezing temps.  I'm  still hopefully excited. I set 18 barnevelders, 20 BLRWs, 15 Cuckoo Marans, and 15 Olive eggers.

its a delicate balancing act especially with shipped eggs.heres a story that happened to us last year ..i sent a freind some eggs and sent her my vets sheet..no lie , she lives way down south where its very humid..those eggs were lost in the mail for 2 weeks, they sent them past her house to next state..and stranger yet it was from a PO in her next town...they sat at that location she contacted PO they tried tracking them as we had tracking number on them..long story short..they finnaly made it.. we all thought those are a gonner..but they tried anyway..she just followed the shipped egg paper..three out of 7 hatched...truley none of them should have developed let alone hatched..so theres always hope...so that was both strange and wonderful.

 

This is the one I bought... It is small and the tip fits nicely on the fat end of the egg. I think I am going to put a little rubber washer or possibly glue some felt on the tip though so that it is not hard plastic touching the egg directly.

I looked at the brinsea candlers but my concern was that the looked Like you had to place the edd fat end down on the light pedestal to use it. I was concerned about turning the eggs upside down. Also, I can slide the flashlight around without moving the egg.

So tomorrow (Monday at 5pm) will be day 7 for my shipped eggs. I have been incubating them in my hovabator 1588 between 33 and 35 % humidity. They have been upright in an unplugged egg turner for the whole time.

Sooo tomorrow, on day 7 I am going to plug that egg turner in.

I would love to do a quick candle to see what is going on. I am concerned though.... I have only ever candled my very light brown eggs. The shipped eggs include some medium brown eggs, some maran eggs and some blue eggs. I have heard that maran eggs and blue eggs are nearly impossible to candle. Also, since I have never seen what they should look like, I will not know if they are good or not. I worry that I am going to end up having to live in agony for another two weeks to know if any of them are going to hatch (or even started growing at all). Uggggggggggggg.
Anyone have any advice or ideas on the maran eggs or the blue eggs?

Not sure about the eggs being "fat end down" being a problem, maybe with shipped eggs?Any thoughts on that anyone? I imagine when the hen is rolling them around it happens. Also,when I candle it's how I do it...but then again, my hatch rates haven't been the best! I just got a little above 50% this hatch....but one is still hatching right now...a cute little bantam blue cochin
