I am sorry for your loss.  Unless I was absolutely positive the raccoon was healther, I wouldn't harvest the chickens.

What a tragedy!  I am so very sorry this happened to your chickens.  I would be devastated!

I would be cautious about using anything a raccoon has touched.  Aside from other diseases, they carry a roundworm that can be very dangerous to humans.  The risk is small, but still exists.  In theory, as long as you clean, process, and cook your meat thoroughly, it shouldn't be a problem.  But please do be careful.  If there are any raccoon feces in your coop, definitely wear gloves and clean everything well so that you don't accidentally come in contact with anything.

No sure about eating the meat of the birds.  I would have def. done the same to the raccoon.

You can order 15 minimum for Cackle Hatchery and also from Country Hatchery.

I've used both and had good sucess with both.  I will say Cackle Hatchery has a larger selection of breeds.  But i've ordered from Country Hatchery more often because they are closer to me so shipping is less.

I currently have a raccoon raiding my duck eggs.  I tried the trap but the old cogger won't go near it.  A farmer told me to add coolant to bait eggs and sit them outside the fenced yard.  (I keep the ducks in a small private fenced yard next to my house)    So far the da****** raccoon has eaten 4 baited eggs each night for the last 3 nights PLUS 2 or 3 of the just lain duck eggs for a total of 19 eggs in 3 nights.  How long does it take the coolant to work... he's getting at least 4 cc of coolant each night.???

Any other ideas before he decides to add meat to his eggs.??

Most things I read say poisoning raccoons doesn't work; they have high resistance. They will start going for meat.

Get a live trap. Home Depot or TSC have them (the ones at TSC are better, and I think they're less expensive).

Do you cover the trap? I put grasses over mine to make it like a tunnel.I am suprised how easy it has been. The leg traps would be good, but you get so many others in them.

Hey..the live trapping does work. Or you can just build a fail proof coop with an apparent fatal flaw---a roof the caves in. That was my mistake and I sure did catch the coon to say the least. It's laying five feet deep right now.

Be sure to hide the live trap and marshmallows never, ever fails...

this is normally because someone has relocated the coon thus educating it not to get back in cages I  switch types of traps and catch the coon fairly quickly then  most trying poisin sp coon use golden malrin it is not legal to use partly because it IS very non selective and very deadly when mixed with coke a cola

Regular antifreeze,  ethylene glycol,   will kill but I don't think overnight.  Believe it affects the kidneys.  That is why the animal friendly antifreeze is suggested, propylene glycol-based.  You might have more than one raccoon visiting which means the same one did not get all 4 baited eggs.  Lead works better, trap next.

Leg traps? Saw them at the feed store and they are quite cheap.Poison should work mixed in with food and perhaps placed in a box.
