Hi, would like to get your opinion/confirmation on breeds of these two 6 1/2 week old pullets, please.

We ordered a Barred Rock and an Australorp as day olds from a hatchery.

Is that what they are??

They both look like Barred Rocks to me.

3 cats, 2 dogs, 15 fish, 1 frog and 28 hens, 3 roosters, 22 chicks and 2 Nubian goats, 1 nubian/oberhasli Buck, 1 Saanen Wether and 2 of the cutest little kiddlings.

Someone suggested to my daughter at 4H that one might be a Cuckoo Maran or a Holland, or a mutt.

I didn't know that was possible from the hatchery?

We're keeping them regardless of what they are. It's just that we'd like to know what we have!

At what age do you think they can be positively breed ID'd?

Does the second one have a single comb too? If so they are Barred Plymouth Rocks. If they grow up to lay a white egg then they are California Greys :) I have one and she is always mistaken for a Barred Rock. Both breeds have great personalities! jumpy.gif

Here is what the second chick's head looks like, if that helps.

What type of comb is coming in??

I agree with Chickasaurus Rex, I don't think that hatcheries would accidentally give away Cuckoo Marans, as I've heard they're not the most common of chickens.

Chicken math has struck.

The hens: Goose, BR; Fish and Spork, EEs; Broccoli, mutt; Cricket, WCB Polish.

The pullets: Hobbit, bantam lavender Ameraucana; Quark, bantam silver Ameraucana

The chicks: Banjo, BLRW; (not-names-yet), white Sultan

And two beautiful, illegal roosters.  Trying to find homes.

Cuckoo Marans are much more money and hard to come by,Now if that is the only kind of chickens you have, No there is no Australorps in the photos. they are Pure black, with a green shine to them, White on the undersides of there feet and white toes.  why dont you think this is a Barred Rock??

They look like Barred Rocks to me! Marans have pink legs, so they aren't that.

Why are you skeptical that they aren't Barred Rocks?

The second one looks like it could be a Dominique. Rose comb, barred feather pattern, sweet birds, consistent layers.

1 handy lovable hubby, 2 talented, loving sons, 2 precious daughters-in-love, 5 brilliant, beautiful, amazing grandchildren.

39 chickens, 6 turkeys and 5 guineas.

Blessed beyond measure, showered with blessings, standing on the promises.
