The other day I had to go to the feed store and pick up some more chick feed, and could not resist checking out the chick room....

Well....I ended up walking out with 2 Blue Silkie chicks, both one day old. I wanted to get one of every color, but the buffs/blacks and whites were all reserved.

Anyways, I was checking them over last night and noticed that one chick (the lighter one) has 5 toes on both feet- plus it's head has a little fluff bump that sort of reminds me of the polish chicks I saw.
The other chick (the darker of the two) has 5 toes on one foot and only 4 toes on the other- is that normal, or is this a mixed chick or what? This one wasn't very active after bringing it home, so I have been giving it egg yolk every once in a while and it has drastically improved!! Went from not opening its eyes and barely walking around to running all over, drinking and chirping!

Anyways, I know it is hard to sex silkies so I won't even ask....but I would like to know what the deal is with the different number of toes on each feet??

I will try and get some good pics of the tiny fuzzy guys later!

Silkies are suppose to have 5 toes on each foot and "poofs" on their head

They usually have beards too but hatchery quality silkies don't always have all of these features. The chick with 4 toes on one foot and 5 on the other is normal, being that it came from a feed store. If you're not planning on showing them then there is nothing to worry about. Hope you enjoy the little ones! Silkie chicks are the cutest!!!

The one with five toes on both feet has a poof on his/her head and a beard, so I guess I got a decent quality silkie from my feed store! The other one, with 4 toes on one foot and 5 on the other, doesn't have a pronounced puff or beard but it could just be because it is SO tiny. I'm really in love with this one, it has totally bonded with me through the feedings- it knows my voice and comes over ready to eat some yolk!! I don't plan on showing, just wanted some cool chickens- and I'm really hoping I get at least one pullet out of the two so I have a broody hen! I wouldn't mind a pair either, as long as one ends up being a hen!!

Well, my littlest silkie passed away last night.
I went to the feed store to talk to the chicken lady there- she is an awesome woman who has helped me so much, she is super knowledgeable and friendly. Anyways, I told her what happened and she ended up sending me home with two white silkies (one is smaller than the other and just like the blue one I lost, it only has 9 toes total/the other is a perfect example of a white silkie chick) and a golden campine!! The best part is, she only charged me for the one silkie, I got two freebies!! They were the 'runts' out of those two boxes, so I'm not going to get my hopes too high that they will make it to maturity- but they are rather active for being so small.

Anyways....thought I'd update, even though it seems pointless to post on here.

Well, I just wanted to let you know that it's not pointless at all to post here - I appreciate your update very much! I'm sure that there are many others like myself that read much more than they post. I cannot tell you how many times I have read a post/question/situation that I will never know how it turned out, because the OP never came back and told us what happened. So don't be discouraged if no one answers you - if you help at least one person by posting a follow up, then it was worth it.

I'm sorry you lost your first little one, and I hope that your new little ones are growing and healthy. I would love to hear how they're doing, and I'm sure I'm not the only one :)

Silkies come in both beardless and beared.

~ also a silkie will have 5 toes, black skin, black legs, feathered legs, and a poof. Sometimes hatchery silkies will lack all 10 toes and have tiny poofs.

~ sorry your baby died but it was really nice of the feed store to have done that ours here wont do that.

That was a nice feed store! And sorry about the babies, I would love some blue silkies, but my feed store only had white. And they do come bearded and non bearded. My pair is roo is not bearded, and hen is bearded.
