hi i would like to know how do you get chickens blue blood which chicken you need to pick when to get them for fair and i have a question is it true that after 10 weeks chickens cant walk anymore and they start to die?

"Meat chickens" are solely raised for eating.

They eat a lot as chicks and grow very rapidly.

They are ready to butcher at 8 weeks.

They will probably die before they reach 3 months of age.

Other chickens are kept as egg layers or pets (and you can eat them, too).

Sorry I can't answer your other questions.

Honestly I don't understand the first question, can you make it a little more clear?

Are you looking for a blue ribbon winner chicken breed for the fair?

If so, then you get to pick what kind (breed) of chicken you'd like to raise.  A meat bird (Cornish Cross or CX on this board) lives a short life and is butchered for someone's table.  A layer bird is one that is kept for eggs and lives a good long life.

Find someone near you (a mentor in your group) who raises good chicks and try some of that breed to start with.

Learn what the breed standard has to say about how they're shaped, what color eyes and legs they should have, etc.

Find a bird in your flock who has the most of those things listed in the breed standard and exhibit that one or two.  The judges will be happy to share knowledge with you, espeically if you're just starting out so you can improve your flock for the next year.

Hope this helps.

Contact your county's 4H poultry leader...they will be able to help you pick out a chicken to start with for showing!  Good luck!  Terri O
