When to stop worrying about eating wood shavings?

Every time I remove the paper towels, the chicks go crazy over the wood shavings underneath.  They are 1 week old now and I would have removed the towels earlier except they act like it's Christmas when I do.  I've seen others' chicks scratch in the shavings and survive.  Can I stop fretting over it now?

Never mind me.  I really have no idea what I'm talking about, I just like pretending that I do.

Usually by 1 week, they know what food is. Keep the feeders at least half full and bedding dry.
