but can't the rooster carry the gene too? so an ee roo over non-ee hens could still pass the gene along.

Yes that is true, in general OR IF there was an EE rooster on my property... but not in my case. If you read Jim's chick is a DB X EE - the eggs are from my pen of Dark Brahmas and I have a sneaky hen (a white hatchery easter egger) who manages to get in there sometimes and lays eggs identical to the brahmas... The only roosters she comes in contact with is an OEGB and a dark brahma roo...and the only one possibly capable of fertilizing her eggs is the brahma and having hatched out the chicks a few times before I know it is a non colored gene offspring being from a Brahma and a brown egg laying hen.

So your hens will lay brown eggs.
You take them and put them under a EE rooster then their offspring could possibly lay a green egg for you. you'd have to watch for the peacomb, not always the case but most of the time it is.

ok, so... isn't an easter egger, by definition, a mixed breed (mutt?) who lays a blue/green egg? so if she doesn't lay blue-green eggs, wouldn't that just make her a mutt?

sorry about the confusion, i saw easter egger and immediately presumed all easter eggers laid blue green eggs...

An EE is a mutt. however EEs are 'supposed' to carry the gene for blue/green BUT being a mix breed it isn't always the case.

Easter Eggers by definition is deceptive. EEs being a mutt they can be any color, have any color legs, beard/muffs or no beard/muffs and they can lay any color egg....

My EE, Big Bird lays a light pink egg. Sometimes it's a little pinker. She is also my hen I used for my purple egg project and produced lavender egg layers in the first generation. Easter Egger means they can be any color from white to brown and other colors inbetween.
