Hi, everyone!

Our poults are 10 days old and have moved from large cardboard box to our 4X8 brooder. Does anyone have any idea about how long will they need extra heat lamps? When can we expect their adult feathering to come in enough to move them outside?

Any advice welcome!

According to the raising baby chicks page here on BYC, they will need extra heat until they are 5-8 weeks which is when they have all of their feathers. Mine are just under 4 weeks and are well over halfway feathered already! I moved them into the 3x6 coop in the garage with their heat lamp yesterday and they are doing just fine (I'm keeping the coop at about 75-80 degrees still in the middle). I'm planning on in another 3-4 few weeks I will move them outside next to the adult coop so they can start getting used to seeing each other before I open the doors and let them intermingle. By then they should be fully feathered and not need the heat lamp at all. I suppose the best way to know is to watch them without the lamp and see if they start huddling together (indicating they are cold). Best wishes with your babies!

Thanks for responding. Is this information about chicks or poults? Since this is my first batch of baby turkeys, I'm wondering if the timing is much different. These are hybrids and not heritage, so I wonder if they feather faster since they put on so much weight faster.

Oops I didn't see that I was in the Turkey section

Turkeys are pretty similar, in a lot of ways, to raising baby chicks though.

Here is a good forum on raising turkeys. Turkeys, from what I've read and have heard, can go into their adult coop at 6-7 weeks. Sorry if I confused you at all. Apparently I need to not be answering posts in the middle of the night LOL
