Baby Treats? - Page 3

My chicks are strange! They don't like anything! My two older pullets love happy hens dried mealworms , romaine lettuce, and alfalfa sprouts. I haven't tried yogurt or cottage cheese yet. Keep meaning too but am afraid it will spoil in our heat- its allready 90 here.
I've tried boiled egg, and tomatoes, lettuce, sprouts, and mealworms and the only thing the chicks seem to eat is the chick starter. They may be too young yet- they're 3 weeks.

I do not know if this is good for them or not, and please let me know if it is not, but I gave mine a bunch of june bugs last night.  For you Yankees a June bug is some kind of mid size beetle that come out at night.  The chicks all had one but ran around chirpping trying to get as far away as possible from the others.  They where quickly dispatched with a few pecks, and eaten.  It was a hoot watching them run around and play keep away with the june bugs.  Well we, me and the chicks, enjoyed it I am sure the June bugs had other ideas.

I've heard any kinds of bugs or worms/catipillars are good for them!

I used scissored up some broccoli florets and gave it to them. They seemed to enjoy the greens.

Also make sure it doesn't have ANY arsenic in it.  We laid patio pavers once and the sand we got from Lowes to put under the pavers had a warning label "Contains Arsenic"   went on to recommend wearing gloves and not to inhale it and that it WAS NOT sand for playgrounds!

The only treat I have given to my 2 week old chicks are a few Happy Hen dried meal worms. They couldn't care any less. They are not too impressed with them??????  I want to give them something fun...but the breeder doesn't recommend giving them anything  sad.png    I do think it is a little too cautious......when raised by their mother they would eat ALL sorts of things. So I don't get it?  She said not to even give them chick grit, the chick starter has "everything they need".   So boring chick starter it is!  idunno.gif

I sprinkled some happy hens dried mealworms in the bedding and they scratched around and finally ate them!

I have been giving mine table scraps chopped up or blended. They love just about everything we do. Yes they get everything they need from starter, but I feel like it is kinda like infants starting food. It is more about the experience and playing with the food than nutritional value at this point.
