I think it's best to have a good temperature range, so that your chicks can choose where they are most comfortable. Too hot is a bigger problem than not hot enough, so keeping the heat lamp just on one side is a good idea so you don't cook them. Enjoy your new chicks! You will love them!

X2. If they're inside the house in a small container they don't even need a heat lamp. A plain 75 watt bulb will be sufficient heat.
Mine go in an outbuilding with a heatlamp and lots of cool space.
That's why I couldn't vote in the poll. Mine are never in the house. My wife would kill me before the dust had a chance to.

Chicken Canoe, LOL. But i am a teensy bit concerned about the dust, but I'll deal with it. (my mom.....uhhhh)

BYC is the "BEST"!!! While perusing the site i find this post about brooder location. I have 16 5day old chicks, and was worried about the location of the brooder!! It is in our living room and we have two teenagers that are always coming and going. Then there is our 4 year old choco lab Toby...he has been very well behaved around the girls...just a little curious when they start chirp-ping. I am very surprised how quickly they have gotten used to me...I can walk up to the brooder and "tweet" a bit and they perk up...they are now looking up at me when I'm over the box. I am so addicted to these little girls
