Who's Brooding? - Page 2

We've already had three broodies this year, & now four more:

2 Khaki Campbells

1 Pilgrim goose

1 turkey

I'm shocked our silkies haven't gone broody yet. They'll probably be next lol.png

No broody silkies yet? That's almost unbelievable! lol

Well all my girls are still setting. I had a little trouble with the one chicken hen that I gave my shipped eggs to, I checked on the girls yesterday & found her in a duck nest! I had to rearrange ALL of the boxes so that she would be happy and stay in her own.... little turd.... Now i just have to keep my fingers crossed that they hatch!

I candled all my broodies eggs & the ones in the incubator tonight.

BROODIES:

- 1 duck egg was bad

- 1 of my chicken eggs was bad

- I had to remove 2 duck eggs becasue she wasnt able to keep them all warm and I figured it was best to take two away now than slowly have them all die from getting cold. They were all developing well.

- I got through about half of the Blue Wyandotte eggs and didnt want to look check anymore because they didn't look like they were developing and it was bumming me out. I will check them again in a week or so.

I have NO idea how many are left under them(lol) but one of the Buff hen that's on duck eggs is doing really well, hers look like they'll hatch in the next few days sinc they're already into the air sacs.

INCUBATOR

- The 3 BLRW eggs had no development in the incubator.

- No development in 2 of my eggs

- 1 of my eggs looked 'weird' so i removed it as well.

46 eggs still in the incubator & developing well.  =)

About a week ago I put 30 or so eggs in my incubator and then it looks like my Buff Orpington has decided to go broody. BUT she can't decide what nest she wants to sit on. This is the first time having a broody so I am assuming the minute I see an egg out of place or layed by another hen I need to collect it right away right? Or should I try and move miss broody out of the hen house and into a dog crate? I've been putting some of my silkie eggs under her.

I would move her into her own space so she can settle into one nest. Thankfully I had an empty coop/house that I moved all my broody girls into. Are you able to remove & move one of the nests? I did this with all my girls, they got good and broody then I moved them(inside their boxes) to the other coop.

You could just have an indecisive broody that you might have to break broody with. Some hens think they want to do it but they can never stay on the nest consistently so the eggs don't survive.

I don't have removable nest boxes. I guess if she decides not to sit then I'll just have to deal with it;)
