Dog changed our design plans...

very cute little tractor! I would worry 30 -40 chickens would devastate your orchard over time if they could get in the trees and maybe too much poop on the ground. I have a brittany and I would never trust her with my chickens either! But I only have 3 silkies. I'm sure you will figure something out.

My husband wanted to get a larger water bowl and I realized that drowning was the reason for not getting a bigger bowl. I think we're all tired of changing the water every hour. They have pine shavings in the water within minutes. The pine shavings absorb the water. I keep thinking there's gotta be a better way. I'm thinking others have had the same water-bowl experiences?

Another point I wanted to add to this thread is that my cat is totally avoiding the chicks, and us. While we've had the chicks in the tractor, he's been MIA. We had them in a fenced-in area where he hangs out and he came around, appeared to just check it all out and then vanished the rest of the day. That was in an area where the cat's food and water bowl stays. I know better than to trust a cat though. I remember my father saying they always kept a cat around to manage the moles and other critters. They also let the chickens free-range. I want both!!!

Too much poop on the ground would be too much nitrogen (?) in the soil? I hadn't thought about that!

My chickens are outside and I have a ferrel kitty that hangs out at my back door looking in most every morning and evening. I thought she would start hanging out by the coop watching the chickens but she doesn't seem to notice them.

how big is your orchard??? too much poop would be a bunch of things...water runoff would be polluting the waters. too much nitrogen. eventually it causes a hardpan effect where basically nothing will grow and it will drainvery poorly. also more potential for parasite issues. Could you rotate them in different portions? that would save some vegetative growth too.
