Hello from Connecticut!

HI Everyone!  I'm new to the group.  I found your site when I started to look up information about town ordinances for keeping chickens.  Your site has more information than the actual town website.  The ordinance isn't clear it only states that they are allowed to inspect or take down a coop and I'm really not even sure if what I'm reading is current.  I suppose I'll have to call New Britain City Hall to know for sure.  If I can't legally keep them here I'm pretty sure I can at my Dad' since he lives in Berlin but we shall see.  Regardless of where I keep them (I'm open to renting out a space in a town that allows them), I want to learn as much as I can before I take the plunge.

BUT despite all of the minor details, I think your site is cool!  There's a ton of information on here and I can't wait to read up on everything. 

I've had a bird fancy for quite some time.  I love all kinds of birds and have kept a bird feeder (which the squirrels mostly eat out of) for years.  We have several families of birds that live in my backyard and one of them happens to be a hawk family that tried to dine on me and my 25 pound cocker spaniel once.  They didn't get to him or me because I scared them by standing up.  I also took the dog into the house because I didn't want to push my luck. 

Having hawk so close to the house does make me a little leery about having chickens.  I'm not sure how to protect them aside from the coop.  I have a heated garage too but I'm not sure how they'd feel about being so close to my dog and cat that live inside the house.   

As you can see I'm not all that knowledgeable and I have several things to consider.  This is a new interest of mine and I want to learn as much as I can.

Some of my other interests are writing, reading, crocheting, yoga, gardening, cooking, and baking.

Feeling the love on the forum!!! Hi Kidcody and 4-h Chicken Mom!!!  I sure hope I can keep chickens too.  I think my daughters could learn a lot from this experience.  They both love animals but I think that love could go so much deeper once they see where our food comes from-- at least that's what I believe.

My youngest is 4 and she got to hold a baby chick for the first time last year at one of the local fairs around here.  The man was really sweet and patient with my daughter and that made the experience so nice because my daughter wasn't exactly gentle with the chick at first.  The amazement in her eyes was so priceless though.
