Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Yep! Just walk up to the counter and ask what price their grains are going for by the 100 lbs. Then just order what grains you want to use..they will either sell them by the 100# or 50#. I got 250 lbs of grain for $56....I've only used a fourth of that so far and my birds will be 4 wks old on 4/19.

Do they go by mixed, or would you want a mix of wheat, corn, oats, etc?

I used all of my allotted daily brain power at work today, so I'm pretty dumb right now :)

I doubt they would mix your preferred grains for you unless you were buying by the ton. I just mix them when I get home by pouring some of each bag into a large trash can, stir well, repeat until all grains that can fit in the can have been deposited and mixed.

Gotcha! I have a few big blue barrels I can use for that (that's where I normally store feed, they have locking lids and everything).

I like the way you all think outside the box instead of doing things the cookie cutter way, so here is a question I would like to throw out there,.. Do you think I could make this work for some quail and would anyone have any suggestions on trying it, not talking about breeding stock just want to put a couple dozen in freezer.....I figure it can not hurt to try after all quail can go thru alot of feed in a short time, which is what stops me from keeping them, and the price of game feed.

We used to say "being creative" and now it's "thinking out of the box." hehe.

Anyway, for those wanting to figure out what grains to use, this might be helpful.

and
http://www.lionsgrip.com/nutrition.html

are especially helpful pages. Scroll down and you'll find lots of good info on the food and protien values of different grains and how to figure out how much protien your mix will have. That said, you also can do as the writer does, and offer a high protien source a la carte or do as you wish. Like Bee says, just observe the flock; they'll let you know what's the best for them.

As a side note, mine don't care for the corn either. Or the oats. They do love the wheat though. Must be the source is all I can think of.

I know I've probably missed it, but if I were to go to the feed mill, what would I "ask" for to get the grains to use? We have a small, local mill that so far has fit my needs well, and I want to use them, I know they could get what I want, but I'm not sure what it is I want to get! LOL!

I'd like to try this with the next batch of CX I do, which will be 50, and I'll be working out a system to contain them outside but somehow keep the hawks from them (the worst predators we have here). Probably ordering the beginning of May :)

It was stated that they use....cracked corn, wheat and barley. :)

I would love if you could share your system to keep hawks from them. That is our biggest problem here too!! Grrrr

I have two hawk deterrents that have worked thus far...and I'll let you know if they fail. We live right in the middle of forest land with 1000 acres of public lands on our border, so hawks are abundant here, as well as owls.

Here are my hawk deterrents:

Scary Sue~ she sways in the wind and even revolves. I move her location every day or every other day and it's easy because she is just PVC placed over a metal push in stake.

Jake AKA Chocolate Thunder~he will actually jump up into the air at low flying buzzards and other large birds.

And tree cover, "wings" open on the coop under which to duck...and they do! I can give a roo alarm call and they RUN for cover!

Scary Sue is awesome! LOL. and Jake looks like he is up to the job. We kept our CX penned in a moving loop along the fence line, the trees provided shade and protection from aerial predators.

Beekissed....OMGosh, that is so awesome!! I think I'm going to have to have hubby build me one of those!!!

I love your dog too!! My girl was a great watchdog for hawks too but we lost her this last winter. It still makes me cry to think about her!
