Keeping coyotes out of my yard

I'm new to keeping chickens and will be receiving mine soon. In the meantime I'm beginning the preperations. I live on a 1/2 acre, fully fenced lot. My yard has a six foot redwood fence. My concern is that there is a coyote den not far from my house and the other side of my yard is desert. I am concerned having chickens will tempt the coyotes to try to enter my yard. I have children and two dogs (which are kenneled while I'm at work during the day). I've thought of laying some hardwire cloth under the fence and covering with some leftover broken concrete pieces we have. Will that be enough? Can you think of any other ways I can discourage the coyotes? I've also heard there is a racoon in the area but I've never seen him.

Prevention is better than cure and it's good to see you're thinking ahead with regard to predators. Your idea with the hardwire cloth sounds good. I found putting corrugated sink sheets around the chicken area helps. It keeps the chickens out of sight, provides shade and shelter from sun and wind and snakes and smaller animals can't climb over it.
 
Keeping coyotes of a pen or run is easy but if yard is large, a high and expensive fence would be required to physically block coyotes. If large enough, more than 50% larger than coyotes, your best options are kenneled.
 
I currently have a 6ft redwood fence, can a coyote jump a 6ft fence? Would a coyote dig under a fence to get at a chicken coop? I plan to lock up the coop at night and build a run with buried hardware cloth. But I let my dogs out in the early morning to do their business and play before they are kenneled while indoors. It is still dark when I leave and don't want to worry about the dogs/kids in the backyard during that time.

I have heard coyotes behind my fenceline to many times to count so I know it is an area they frequent. I've never had a problem before but am afraid the chickens would be too tempting for them. What I really need is a shotgun and to learn to shoot. I hate coyotes!
 
Can clamber over a 6-foot fence. Digging will be done if they do not feel threatened. How big are your dogs?

Getting them to mark around poultry pens will add to protection provided by construction.

Make so birds roost in elevated location for added protection.


What does your poultry containment look like.
 
Dogs are a Lab and Brittney Spaniel. They routinely patrol the fence line.........barking, etc. I will encourage them to mark out there. I will receive my coop on Monday. I have a carpenter building it. It is shed like, but am not sure if it is raised or not. I was told it was very secure but I can post a pic after I receive it Monday.
 
I don't know if your some animal lover or anything but if you put fly bait mixed with coke or pepsi in a dish the coyotes or any predator that might harm your chickens will lick it up and die. I've used it on raccoons and they will not make it 30 yards from the dish.

You have to make sure to lock up your pets and talk to your neighbors to Make sure their pets are locked up to so they don't run over and lick it up to.

Putting out poison that can kill anything that eats it is hardly a "good idea"

Put up some electric fencing, but keep in mind you won't keep anything out if you don't fence all four sides
