Just got the new chicks - 2 questions re dogs & lamps

I know I should remember this, but at what height should I keep their lamp away from them? I remember the rule about they'll huddle if cold, scatter if too warm. But they're kind of divided, so I'm confused. I don't want to fry the close ones, if it IS too close. Please help.

 

The other question is something that we haven't dealt with in the past. We've got a black lab this time around. 6 months and baby chicks. Is this just a disaster waiting to happen? Can they learn to coexist? What's the best way to deal with this scenario.

If they are all over the brooder, the light sounds just fine.

 

As for the dog, others will have to chime in. There are camps of do not separate, and camps of you can train it.

Thank you! Yeah, the light seems to be working just fine...re where the chicks are spread out, so I'll just keep it where it is. Maybe I'll just post another thread about the lab. He's licking his chops! Grrrr!
