pics of our water platform we built

After our new babies got too big for their brooder, we built them a pen in the bird yard but they were continuously emptying their waterer so we built them this new platform to keep the mud and mess down a little. We weren't sure they would be able to step up on it but they've had no problems at all and get on and off it just fine.

Barred rocks, red sex link, silver wyandotte, white leghorns, mottled cochin banty, silkie, blue swedish and khaki campbell ducks, meat rabbits, white holland turkeys, turtles, cats, and as much garden space as one can cram into a small urban yard half given over to the chickens

That looks sharp!

With photo's it is not always easy to gauge distances.  So, I'll ask . . . are the gaps between the boards small enough to prevent someone from turning their ankle?  My duckies have done some very, oh how do I say it, surprising things over the years, getting stuck where I never guessed they might.  Just wanted to mention it, more as an extra caution than anything.

If they might, some plastic poultry fence across the top or some other kind of softer mesh with smaller gaps that could be lifted off and rinsed off from time to time if necessary could be something to consider.

Cute little fuzzy in the background!!!

I would line it with fencing, too. Every duck ive ever had have been realllllly clumsy. Lol! Look awesome, though. It will help a lot.

The gaps are about 1/2 inch. Thanks for the advice. I watched them on it today and realized they could hurt their ankles if they stepped wrong so I'm getting some hardware cloth tomorrow to put over it. Other than that it seems to be working great for keeping down the mess of the mud and wet bedding. I think I'll be able to take off the wire each day when I change their water out and hose it down.
