why is my silkie batch not very... fluffy?

Hi! Today i just had to rehome some roos... it was sad but theyre okay, but when they were handed over, the people already had silkies, which made me think.

Why are other people's silkies so fluffeh!?

Mine are a bit "poofy" but maybe a third the puff of one you'd see on the silkie thread.

Do i need to blowdry them? Bathe them? what do i need to do (because that way they will be nice and cozy and pretty)

Also, when do silkies lay?

i got lots o' hens: my special mutt, Hope,Cuckoo Marans hen, Barred Rock,White Leghorn,Buff Silkie, White Bantam Frizzle Cochin

some roos too!: Cuckoo Marans, White Leghorn, Buff Silkie, and my special mutt Snippy

it's just the quality of the breeding that contributes to how fluffy they are. hatchery silkies aren't as fluffy as silkies from someone who breeds them for a specific look/type.

my silkie started laying at 23 weeks, but usually I think it takes them a while longer than that

Most breeders do "selective" breeding.  They take the more poufy ones and use those for breeding stock.  I have a few of the extra poufy and the not so poufy.  I think the less pouf, the friendlier the bird....the other ones never seem to know what is going on.  Hahaha!
