Chick acting sick? First time chicken owner

Hey guys,

I am Sammy and I am new here on BC.com and recently had gotten 6 baby chicks for my birthday (2 days ago). One small female, does not eat as fast as the others, does not go toilet as much, and sleeps more often as well as had some loose droppings. I did research before I had obtained them, and I am not sure if maybe she is adjusting, or should I be concerned? Thanks!

Coccidiosis or worms (most common)  could be causing that. Coccidia really hurts the chicks tummy, has the chick been peeping a lot? 

 

It's the shape that makes the breed, and the color that makes the variety.

No she hasn't :/ I was told by a fellow chicken-raiser that it is possibly stress since she has only been here for 2 days now

I had a chick like that once, she'd sleep a ton! She wasn't as active as the others, and she never got sick. They are babies. So they need their rest, if she doesn't get better after a few days just report that.

Ok thanks :) I will have my sisters leave her alone and let her sleep, she does tend to be adventurous when she is awake haha.

If your chick is not very energetic, it helps if you put a tiny bit of sugar in their water. It helps to perk them up. Also, if you feed the chicks medicated chick starter, it will prevent coccidiosis. If you go to this website it will give you a bunch of information.smile.png

Thanks guys n.n I'll try the sugar water, since I already feed them the medicated chick feed (and they eat ALOT of it)

Be very careful with the sugar water..... if you do give it to them only give it to them for a day .... too much sugar water is bad for them and can cause pasty butt....  Some people suggest honey in the water if you feel you have to give them something.... but this too should be given with caution.  

 

You can give them electrolytes in their water from the feed store....  or in a pinch pedilyte non flavored!  The other thing you might want to do is give the weak chick some polyisol vitamins with NO IRON!!!  They are liquid baby vitamins and can be found at the drugstore.... You'd give her a drop a day for a few days.  Put it on the side of her beak to make sure she drinks it down and it doesn't go down the wind pipe.  Good luck with you girls!  Keep us posted on their progress.
