Are ALL Your Ducks Housed/Living As 1 Happy Family? or Pairs?

I Wish my ducks could ALL be housed and living as 1 Happy Family...  My ducks are all paired and housed separately.  *My (2yrs.old) Rouen Drake & Hen are together in an area..then separated by a fence... *my (2yrs.old) Golden Cascade Drake & Hen are together in an area.  Then close by is a section where *my (1yr.old)Drake (Rouen/Golden Cascade mixed) is kept.  Next to him is.. *my (8mos.old) Golden Cascade Drake & Hen.  Things seem to be quiet this way, there is no late night squabbles but soon we will be  building a new living area for them and it would be easier if they could ALL live together as 1 Happy Family.     }}} Is this the way they should be housed or does it depend all on the ducks and their attitudes?     }}}What is your ducks living arrangements? Thanks, ~Julie

All mine are housed together in a pen (urban homestead).

2 -8 month old male Pekins

1 -5 month old female Pekin

3 -3 week old Pekin ducklings.

The female got along great with the ducklings right away. The Males didn't for the first day. Now they'll all get along great (it was a rather stressed day when they all met each other, they had been uprooted and tossed into a new, bigger pen and it was all weird with the "strangers").

1 Pit/Chowchow Puppy (Carmen), 1 Boyfriend (Xander)

5 Black Sexlink, 3 Red Sexlink, 1 New Hampshire Red, 1 Cockoo Maran, 2 Delaware, 6 Rhode Island Red, 1 RIR Rooster, 7 Pekin Ducks, 1 Cayuga Duck, 1 Guinea Fowl, 17 Californian Rabbits.

Incubator: 0

The wish list is much longer.

It depends on your male birds. If your lower males don't argue or try to mate with the top males hen then yes we can all get along. I find that the breeds know where they belong and don't try to mix mates. I would worry about all the Pekins together as they mature more.

Mine are... 8 in total

3-drakes

5-hens

They all came in at different times.. i had my original 4(one drake was sold from this group) I bought two 3-4weekers which are now my pair of juvenile drakes and then I purchased 3 hens at about 6+mths old...

They really haven't pair off that much, the oldest drake used to be pretty chummy with one of the original hens but that seems to have died out and his appeal lately has been for Lilly one of our newer hens(although in fairness all these birds were bought last year/summer)  so none are really 'new' anymore.

It's tricky, i think it depends on the dynamics/personality some birds simply will never get along and some are to bonded with another to allow another drake near their "hen"

I of coarse have a skewed ratio.. to many drakes but I have plans to alter that and hope to gain more hens through the nest that is being brooded right now.

My Call pair and my huge Magpie drake all get along great. They were raised together. We recently got two new ducklings, in a couple of weeks when they move in with the big ducks we will see how they act twards them.

Not to long ago the older, paired ducks(Rouen drake/hen & Golden Cascade drake/hen) had all been penned together but both drakes kept going for the same hen. Then they would both be on top of her. All night just about they were fighting and being loud. When "Lucky Ducky" my 1yr old drake(7 mo old at the time) he would chase and fight the Rouen drake (his father). it was a circus.  Now sometimes if "Jax" the 8mo. old Golden Cascade drake flies over the fence to lucky ducky then Jax beats him up.~ Crazy birds.  So it has been quieter since their all penned separately.  ~Julie~
