wire baskets for egg collecting......

Hi, this is our first time with chickens, and I keep seeing wire baskets used for egg collecting.....  is there a reason for this?

SAHM with two great boys, and the best husband ever.

 

1 Rhode Island Red, 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Leghorn, 1 Silver Spangled Hamburg, 1 Light Brahma, 1 polish, 1 buff Orpington and 2 Wyandottes (1 GL, 1BLR) And 1 barnyard special that seems to be brahmaish (the one and only egg that hatched in our science experiment)

dreaming of a bigger place and more girls......

Egg collection or egg display?

 

I display mine in a ceramic wire basket, I collect in a wicker basket.

I don't know of any reason, but I don't do that.

They're not required by any means. I've used everything from an old can to my hat to carry eggs in.

That said though I use a wire basket now myself, but we're gathering sixty to seventy eggs a day. If an egg should happen to break amongst the others I can hose the goo out without having to remove the remaining eggs first. Plus it is convenient when I wash eggs to simply have the water running over the eggs in the basket.

But use whatever you like.

wow, I could see how a break could happen.  I wasn't sure if it had to do with shell hardening or another unknown.  That makes sense, and a easy way of cleaning the eggs too!  thank you  :)

*shrug*  My shirt works just fine, that or I just take cartons out with me and fill them as I go. 

Kara - home to 1 smart dog, 1 hyper puppy, 3 lazy cats, and 32 crazy chickens...oh, and a 13 year old kid and a husband thrown in there for good measure.
