Mice in, or around the coop..?!

Mice are on the short list of intolerable things in the egg industry.

And you people are advocating feeding them to chickens?

An old thread, I know. But the article you linked to mentions chickens can get salmonella from mouse droppings. The OP was very quite clear that she cooked the mice. Cooking will destroy any salmonella.

Also, it's only been in recent years that all that many people have gotten salmonella poisoning from undercooked eggs. It used to be you were pretty much guaranteed to get it if you ate undercooked chicken meat, but rarely from the eggs. I read an article about this a few years ago...the amount of salmonella an industrial farmed chicken carries is massive compared to the past, the main theory for this is the fact that the number of chickens housed in an industrial farm is also massive compared to the past.

I would never eat undercooked eggs from one of these massive industrial egg farms.

Actually, being in Alaska, our mice are disease free here. :)
PLUS, the main reason I cooked them, was to kill off any potential pathogens.

That said, after the whole mouse feeding thing, my chickens have become VERY good little mouse hunters. :)
I have seen them on many occasions run around with a dead mouse in their beaks (that they caught themselves). :)
The ones they catch I can't cook, obviously, because..... Well.. Good luck catching a happy hen running around a wooded area on over an acre with a mouse in her mouth! LoL

I have one hen (Olivia) that figured out where all the mouse holes are, and she stands by them like a statue, patiently waiting for the little buggers to pop their heads out. LoL

Wow, as a newbie with 9 chickens I'm worried about mice now. I just discovered mice inside my coop. I put hardware cloth on the ground, then 2" of sand , which I didn't like so I put rubber horse stall mats over the sand, then straw. I discovered mice had burrowed a nest between the mat and the wire in the sand. My nephew saw them. I don't believe in poison or sticky traps. I have an electric mouse trap that works good but I am afraid to put it inside with the straw. I put it just outside the coop and have caught two rats, but no mice. Anyone with ideas?

I agree with you about the whole thing, but as a newbie, the "argument" was very informative. Thanks for starting it HAHA!!

a wire across a tall bucket 3 inches or so full with a bottle covered in PB on the wire they go after the PB and drop into the water and drown It really helps keep numbers down.
