... I feel like writing an open letter to hatcheries to  complain about the fact that they basically lie to their customers by selling "Ameraucanas" and "Araucanas" when really, whether you like it or not, they are "just" Easter Eggers. rant.gif

Happy Owner of 6 modern day T-Rex's, and 2 Russian Tortoises! There are more chickens on earth than humans & Alektorophobia is the fear of chickens. Random Fact-- One penny doubled everyday would be over 5 million in 30 days.

You can write one to Coastal Farm Store I was there today looking at chicks and they were labeled Ameraucanas that lay green and pink eggs.  I am like  Oh no they are not. somad.gif

Well see, it's not exactly the  farm store's fault. They purchase their chicks from the hatcheries, and label them what the hatcheries say they are. The farms stores can't really, truly be blamed because they (more than likely) have no clue.

Not this again...

Our Araucanas are recommended for egg laying color and ability and not for exhibition.

None of the hatcheries claim show quality or to even breed to any standard. Hatcheries are breeding for production. Always have.

The blue egg breeders are the only group that seems to throw a fit about this. But then, they are the only group that treats people that dirt for owning a bird that is not show quality an tells them they have to call it a different name.

If they are eastereggers shouldn't they be labeled as such?

Yes, hatcheries breed for production. But if they are Araucanas or Ameraucanas (which are two separate breeds, but hatcheries sell them as one and the same), they should at least somewhat resemble something that looks like the breed's SOP.

Araucana:

Quote:

Little is known of the origin of the Araucana except that some came from South America and they have the distinction of laying a turquoise or lue shelled egg. They were first imported into the United States in the early 1930's. They are rumpless and have tufts of feathers protruding from each side of the neck. The characteristic for blue egg color is dominant and will occur in the offspring when this fowl is crossed with another breed of domestic chickens: hence, cross-breeds which lay blue or tinted eggs are often mistaken for Araucanas.

Economic qualities

Bred primarily for its novel charcteristic of blue eggs, the Araucana is, nevertheless, a dual purpose fowl that carries a plump, well-fleshed carcass. The hens are good layers of medium sized eggs.

Disqualifications

Lack of ear-tufts; comb other than pea; rudimentary presence of tail; presense of stubs or feathers on shanks; more or less than four toes.

Weights

Standard Cock 5 lbs.
Bantam Cock 34 oz.
Standard Cockerel    4 lbs.
Bantam Cockerel 30 oz.
Standard Hen 4 lbs.
Bantam Hen 30 oz.
Standard Pullet 3 1/2 lbs.
Bantam Pullet 26 oz.

Shape-Male

COMB Pea; rather small; set evenly on head.
BEAK Medium, stout, slightly curved.
FACE Smooth texture.
WATTLES Very small or absent.
EYES Large, bright.
EAR-LOBES      Small, smooth in texture.
EAR-TUFTS Good length. Matching in size, extending from ears in a well-defined curling ringlet
HEAD Moderately large, short, boad.
NECK Medium in length, carried erect, slightly arched.
BACK Medium in length, broad at shoulders, with a posterior slope.
TAIL Entirely absent with no uropyium, saddle feathers flowing over stern.
WINGS Medium, well-folded, carried above lower thighs.
BREAST Full, round, deep.
BODY Moderate length, broad and deep.
FLUFF Medium
LEGS Medium length, straight, set well apart.
TOES Straight, moderate length

It's not fun to have folks come on here believing wholeheartedly that their bird is an Ameraucana or Araucana, and have to tell them that actually it's not what they were told, it's an Easter Egger. It seems to make EEs like a lowly breed - "It's just an EE." If the bird doesn't fit the SOP, it shouldn't be advertised as such IMO.
