"Porcelain" eggs?

My easter egger has been laying eggs that sound like fine porcelain when tapped.  It's very odd.  I noticed it when the other eggs in my basket knocked against it.  At first I thought I must have picked up a dummy egg by mistake, but nope! I have no blue dummy eggs, and that was the one making the sound.  The yolk and albumen were normal.  Has anybody encountered this before? (I seem to be very good at asking questions nobody can answer, hopefully someone can offer some insight fl.gif )  This is the same bird who started laying warty eggs when I began free ranging my chickens earlier this year.  Could this be connected?

How long has she been laying? I wouldn't worry about what the egg sounds like when tapped. So long as the contents are fine, the shell shouldn't impact whether or not you can eat it. If you want to hatch eggs, however, you might need to pay more attention to the shell and whether it is thin and porous or too thick. That would have an effect on hatch rate of chicks from that hen. I just wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

She's a year old now, so I'd say she's been laying for 8-9 months.  I won't worry then.  I don't plan on hatching her eggs.  I was worried that this might be a sign of a problem with the hen.  If it's not though, I won't worry.

Sounds to me like she has a nice, strong shell. The warts are just calcium deposits, probably from all of the extra bugs she eats when free ranging. Good luck!

I have a GLW that has the same problem and "warty" eggs, I thought it was just her age, she is over 2 years and lays about 4 to 5 a week still.  Egg inside is great and they are big XL eggs.  Glad you asked this, because I was wondering about this too.
