Can an egg develop with a broken yolk?

I just took out an egg that on day 5 looked like it had a broken yolk. I assumed it wouldn't be viable. The yolk was indeed completely broken, but there was some sign of development. (Less, I think, than the other positively developing eggs but I'm not 100% sure because I didn't see them out of the shell.)

 

In the future, should I let a broken yolk be? When I candled it, I couldn't see any development because of the giant yolk blob. It's too late for this egg, but if I come across it again should I remove the egg or let it keep cooking?

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure that a ruptured yolk means the egg can not possibly survive.  The purpose of the yolk is to nourish the developing embryo and the chick immediately after hatching.  If it is ruptured, then the embryo's access to the yolk is disrupted and they will not be able to absorb it properly.  I think you did the right thing.

Thanks. I've done some searches here and on google, and the basic consensus is that they don't make it. I haven't seen anyone who says they had a scrambled yolk and the chick made it.

 

The yolk was extremely scrambled, and egg looked to like it had developed to day 2 or 3 and then stopped. Usually I leave a questionable egg alone, but this one was so weird when candled that I took it out and had a look. The egg itself was also slightly mis-shapen, so it may have been messed up before it exited the chicken.
